i've recently become a NIN fan after getting With teeth ( i bloody love it)
i am now considering getting Pretty Hate Machine and i was just wondering how the two compare.before you start calling me a dumbass for not figuring out that the debut and latest albums are obviously gonna be quite different rest assured that i have already figured that out myself.
any help would be appreciated

its got a very 80's sound to it..but at the same time some very depressing stuff.
i think it's a way better album than "With Teeth" too.
go get it..no regrets i gurantee.

Some of the reasons why....
* The only time!!! <~~~ I cannot get enough of this song. Major stand out track imo. Looove this one so much!
* Something I Can Never Have!<~~ easily one of THE most hauntingly gorgeous, beyond depressing songs out there. Serious power going on here.
* Terrible Lie!! <~~ These sounds are kick ass! This song RULES!
* Sin<~~ another fav. Looove the lyrics!
The entire album from start to finish is A-MAZING. The sound is waaay different from With Teeth but the darkness and incredible talent still remains for damn sure. Everything is just so fresh and raw though, which really adds to the greatness of the album. Pretty Hate Machine does have a very "machine" like sound to it actually. All of the songs are really industrial sounding. Very catchy, dark, clutching industrial beats. And the lyrics here always blow me away. Wooow. I remember the first time I heard this album yeeeears ago...actually sitting down and reading along. The album hit me before I knew all the words, but once I actually knew them I just felt such an intense bond. The love was pushed to the max. The album is very relatable to say the least. I couldn't stop listening to this badboy for months on end. To this day I will never tire of it. The power, love & greatness just keeps growing with each listen.
Yeah...so um.... I recommend PRETTY HATE MACHINE. hehe.
Fully agree with AxlUlrich.... GET IT Omarama! No regrets guaranteed TWICE.

"Sin" is for me the best NIN song ever!
"Something I Can Never Have" is great too..imo better than "Hurt"
the version on the Still EP is even better!
another great track on this album is "That's What I Get"

yeah, like axlulrich said... it's better than "with teeth," and "with teeth" is pretty good itself.

Well said! Sin is awesome and kicks major ass in concert!! PHM definitely seems less "hard" and more "electronic" than Trent's later material but it is a phenomenal album! I saw NIN in September and can't wait for them to come back!! My favorite concerts to go to besides PJ!!

Love Something I can never have.
A crowd at a concert reacts almost more to that song than Hurt.
A must own for a new and an old NIN fan.
'something i can never have' isn't only one of my favourite NIN songs but one of my favourite tunes ever... and check out the .still version, too... amazing!!!
'hurt' is always very emotional but also so widely known... but when i heard trent do SICNH live i cried... i'm not ashamed to admit it... gets me every time...
and i can't believe you guys also dig 'that's what i get'... i always thought i was the only one...
'the only time' grooves so sexy... makes me almost forget about the lyrics... maybe i'm all messed up, hehe...
'head like a hole', 'terrible lie', 'down in it', 'sin' - all classics!!!!
let's not forget 'ringfinger'... now add 'sanctified' and 'kinda i want to' and you've got an amazing album...
god, i remember listening to this album in the school hall, me and my mate sharing one (!) pair of earphones of a super-sized walkman (anyone remember tapes?)... people laughing about us for listening to this weirdo music... after all those years, i want to ask them who's got the last laugh now...
i don't think many would disagree that trent is a sonic genius... but he's also a very underrated singer...
there's this famous quote by a black music critic who called kurt cobain the greatest SOUL singer of the 90s...
i kinda agree... but he's surpassed by trent...
he would have also been the greatest if he had recorded in motown in the 60s backed by the funk brothers...
just like his great sense of humour, this is one aspect of his work that's never recognized... but maybe that's just me

its a 180 from with teeth. 80's catcy indutrial with a very dark side. BUT it's the shit. after that get the fragile and the downward spiral..
