Either Boys and Girls for the sheer catchy fun, or Almost Killed Me, for the shameless anti-indie-kid posturing and guitar solos. But my favourite song is probably Lord I'm Discouraged.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.
Boys & Girls in America. Although, Stay Positive comes in pretty damn close at #2.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
being from suburban mpls, there's sooo many things on this album that ring true, and it's fun to pick up on all the local references and innuendos
agree.
"I'll do whatever the song dictates - if it doesn't need a real lead, then I won't do one. But if it does, then I'll fuckin' go off." - Mike
"Japan is awesome; the fans there knew all the words to all the songs...at least phonetically." - Stone
"I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version." - EV
I'm going to see Drive-by Truckers in a couple weeks, so I need an introduction to the Hold Steady (they're closing the show that particular night).
I plan on buying 2 of their albums from emusic, so I'd like to know which one's would be the best introduction to an uneducated concert-goer. Which albums to they pull the most songs from?
I don't want to be completely lost when they get on stage!

They'll probably play a lot from Stay Positive and Boys & Girls in America, given that those are the two latest albums, and their most mainstream ones. But once you get those two, you're gonna want Almost Killed Me and Separation Sunday too. They're all both musical and literary masterpieces.

That's what I figured, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Not sure if they're my kind of music, but I'm sure they'll be fun to see no matter what.
I shall download the recent albums as soon as my emusic refreshes Monday!
It's taken me awhile to get into it, but I think Separation Sunday is my favorite now. It's definitely not as accessible and catchy as Boys & Girls, but I think it's the stronger album from start to finish. Stay Positive is just OK to me right now. I think I overhyped it to myself so I had a bit of a letdown when it came out, but right now I wouldn't put it anywhere near Separation Sunday or B&G in terms of overall quality.
I'm going to see these guys a week from Sunday with the Drive-By Truckers!!!! I can't wait!!!!!

Every bit of their style is there...I think they just caught all their lightning in a bottle there. The album grabs you and doesn't let go.
...maybe the the best album of the 2000's?
