I've loaned it to several friends. They're either instantly on board, or I get confused looks when they return it.

lmao!
it is either love em or hate em! i got their first record on a whim, too, and i loved it musically but i hate the way he sings sometimes when he sounds like that guy from rush...but overall i dig em
saw em open up for system of a down last year and thought they sounded great (altho the drums sorta drowned out the guitar)! 2 friends who had seats(we had GA tix) said they thought they sucked and we had an argument on the way home whether or not the singer was a girl.
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
eager to identify with
someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way
Check out Sparta. In particular Wiretap Scars.
I was surprised Frances the Mute did not get more consideration on critics album of the year lists that i saw. I thought it was a great album not perfect but great.

I had it as my top album in my column at http://www.whatcharockin.com. Absolutely fantastic album.
then i heard 'the widow' and i loved it. i knew could not be wrong about these guys. so i bought de- loused.
next of course came frances, by which time i was totally besotted with them.
no one could say a bad word about them to me. i heard they were coming out for the BDO and i was thrilled. i was ready. i understood them (well as much as anyone can understand them) and i figured whatever they did on stage was for them and we were just along for the ride. i'd bought scabdates towards the end of last year and had spent the summer assaulting my ears with it. the day after the BDO,i again saw them. this time at the enmore theatre here in sydney. i tell you it was one of the most amazing concerts i have ever been to. there were moments where the crowd just stood mesmerised by it all. and their drummer, i have never seen anything like him before. he was just just brilliant.
describe them to people? i don't think i could. they are a band you have to experience and then you either love them or you think cedric and omar are pretensious little wankers.
so yeah i guess you could call me an very enthusiastic fan of TMV.
take a good look

Haha, yeah, the exact same thing happened to me, only it was at a concert they had last year opening for System of a Down.
My uncle and I had an argument on whether or not the singer was a girl. I thought it was a guy at first, but then he was trying to convince me it was a girl (I wasn't too sure about the bands name when we saw them play, but after the concert I saw some signs stating it was "The Mars Volta" and then I knew I was right about the singer being a guy). To prove my point I looked it up on the internets when we got home and he was astounded.
Addendum: I don't really like "Sparta" or "At the Drive-In" at all, but I for some reason dig The Mars Volta.
You’re on the outside, never bound by such a spell.
Together in the darkness, alone in the light.
I took it upon me to be yours, Timmy,
I’ll lead your angels and demons at play tonight......»
Also put on a fantastic live show, even if no one ever wants to go with me!
Both their albums are great, and I can't wait for a new one.
ATD-I are legends, though i've never been able to get into Sparta.

Frances is so abstract you really have to be a fan of that kind of music or be able to appreciate good musicianship. The drummin and guitar on that album is some of the best I have heard in awhile. Really fresh.
Scabdates(live album) is more like Frances musically. Seems more like one long song.
Get the Frances the Mute single too, if you can find it.
WIRETAP SCARS!!! great record. 'Porcelin' was not a great follow up imo.
At the Drive-In's 'Relationship of Command' is one of my all time favorite records. Some of the best vocal stylings I have ever heard and probably ever will. 'In-Casino-Out' isn't bad either.
As for Mars Volta, "Deloused in the Comatorium" is a must have cd. The best way to get to know it is to listen to it all the way through in a dark room and just go with it. I liked "Frances the Mute" too, it has a real groove to it, some of the voice alterations that were just weird for the sake of weird I could have done without though.
the bad idea or me befallen by it?
needless to say they neva got it bak.
Delivered him wings, "Hey, look at me now
