I have been listening to Tupac a lot lately, and I wanted to know others opinions. There is no question that he was a true thug and poet. Do you think that he deserves the legendary status that he has?

    Overrated.

Don't get me wrong I love Tupac.

It seems like all dead rappers get "classic" status once they die. He along w/ B.I.G. get a lot of critical acclaim for half ass albums IMO.

Think outside the box! First most dead artists are over-rated ala Elvis (just an example). Second If you can look past your disdain for a genre of music and listen to Pac's me against the world & Makaveli discs or Big's ready to die & life after death these are not so-so albums. Back in the early to mid 90's it was all about lyrics and not the look at me syndrome and I got this and you don't that pervades the genre nowadays. Back then it was Pac,Nas,Big,& Method man,no one had even heard of Jay-Z till Vol. 2 hit it big in 98'. Then Pac & Big got killed,Meth released a sophmore slump album,Jay filled the void. Now Jay retired in 03,the last 2 Nas albums are more like Common and IMO rap has gone downhill. All I'm saying is give it a chance before you bash it. I can listen to just about any genre of music from classic rock, heavy metal, alt, rap, country,or techno (haven't got into classical yet but who knows I'm not going to limit myself to labels of what music is).

2pac kept it real, but Biggie was all about the bling.

2 Pac is the greatest rapper ever. I said it when he was alive. Underated. Definately. I hate Biggie. I think he got lumped in with 2pac into legendary status simply because he died.

Puffy marketed the hell out of Biggies death, the only reason that people thought of Biggie so highly. Puffy dooped America. You may think I'm full of crap for saying this, but chances are if you like Biggie you once owned a Mase or Puffy disc. Now it's embarassing to own that crap, recycled 80s songs. Bad Boy's marketing got you. Same goes on Biggie.

2 Pac was a legend when he died. Hell he was legendary before he died. West Coast rap is miles better than east coast. No one can dispute the intense success of Death Row in its prime. 2 pacs flow, lyrics, and performance are unmatched to this day.

I think 2 pac is such a talent that when he died, he was the best. Hell he was 25 years old! The amount of hits is insane for a 25 year old... the fact that he was in Digital Underground so young is a mark to his talent. Just buy All eyez on me. That album speaks for itself.

    Bottom line...
Biggie = most OVERRATED artist of all time
2 pac = phenominal talent. the best there ever was.

As far as most dead artists I think some get their acclaim because it is well deserved and some get thrown into legendary status without much backing at the time. I'm one of the few here that would say Kurt Cobain deserves all the praise he gets, but that's a whole new topic :)

Biggie was good, but not great.

BTW, west coast rap is not way better than east. I like west better but the east coast is pretty damn good.

    Definitely UNDERATED!
Tupac was phenomenal. He was an amazing lyricist, and he had the most intuitive sense of timing - far and away the best rapper I've ever heard. Even his throw down joints are *the shit*. I don't even think you have to like rap to appreciate his talent. If you like words, you are going to like Tupac.

He was just brilliant, one of those people who operates on a different plane.
I miss Tupac the way I miss Jeff Buckley. I mourn not only the loss of the talented individual, but all that they didn't get to share with the world.

I think he is quite overrated, his first two albums are really good, they got some good beats and more socially conscience rhymes but his music went downhill when he got too gangsta. I also dont understand people that think hes some kind of saint or recreation of God...........he is by no means any kind of moral role model

you need a third option, which is "just where he should be."

he is regarded as a legend. one of the best.

that's where he deserves to be. i don't understand how he could be considered underrated.

the man was born to express himself to a beat. i've never heard anyone better at it personally.

and about biggie - he's the shit too. i don't like him like tupac (don't feel the raw passion with biggie) but who can deny he was amazing in his own right...

Tupac is underated. He was innovative in his time. Listen to the lyrics.

Like most Tupac fans, you choose only to listen to SOME of the lyrics.

the man was a hypocrite, talented, but a hypocrite.

please go check out the digital underground song- Same Song.

Im going from memory here but.. his verse is something like...

Now I clown around when I hang around with the Underground
Girls use to frown, say I'm down, when I come around
gas me and when they pass me they use to diss me
harrass me, but now they ask me if they can kiss me
Get some fame, people change, wanna live they life high
same song, can't go wrong, if I play the nice guy

    Shock G
(clamin that they must have changed, just because we came strong)

    2Pac
I remain, still the same (why 2?) cause it's the same song
