Jim James solo...holy hell!

Just got back from the Newport Folk Festival. I've seen MMJ a bunch, but this is the first time I've seen Jim solo. Saw Ed last night and it was great, but I would take a Jim James set without thinking twice. Great setlist, fantastic arrangements, and his voice was as good as I've heard it.

I'm 3 songs in and it sounds great so far.

I wouldn't say he's better than Eddie solo, but I'm also in a PJ forum and not an MMJ one so thats not a surprise :).

I find it strange that Jim James does solo things considering he doesn't have a solo record out.

I saw MMJ for the first time ever live at the Pemberton music festival last week. I've been listening to MMJ for several years now. There is something fundamentally amazing about the band and about Jim James. I was just thinking while watching them, that this is what its all about..these guys have that x factor that you can't quite put your finger on, but you know its something special. There is such a sincerity to the music and it shows, they aren't following any trends or trying to be anything. They just are, and they are amazing.

You described them so well here! I have seen them twice at Bonnaroo - both amazing shows. I was not familiar with them the first time I saw them but I stayed for the whole 3 hour set. I still have not really got into their studio stuff but their live show is truly an experience that everyone should have.

I actually like JJ solo better than the full mmj

but both are great musical experiences
  • Thanks for the NPR link, I am listening now and yes I tend to agree that I am liking it more than MMJ.......

This first song doesn't sound solo. Did he play alone?

I read somewhere that Jim once found an old jacket with the initials "MMJ" on the inside. Hence My Morning Jacket was born. I dunno how true that is though...

Yeah, that's what the general consensus is. They found it the day after their favorite bar burned down. The jacket in the bar, that is.
