  • i have met him and he's one of the most down to earth people you'd want to meet. very level headed and a true artist. i would think that most canadians would know who he is. he writes from the heart, about canada, about injustice, about so many subjects...it's pure poetry set to music. i can't say enough good things about that man. it was a pleasure to meet him, although the day that i met him was the day johnny cash passed away, so our conversation was somewhat sombre...as was the feeling all around that day.

much love for gord downie...one of canada's greatest writers!

get out and see them on the upcoming tour bubbamackdaddy! :)

Yup, Gord is one of a kind. As a writer he's in a league of his own, and as a frontman he's arguably the best in the biz. A true rock n' roll original. I had the pleasure of meeting him back in '02, and he's a terrific guy. Very friendly, approachable, and down-to-earth. If you're a fan of the Hip, I also recommend checking out his solo albums "Coke Machine Glow" and "Battle of the Nudes". They're both amazing records, and VERY different from his work with the Hip. Much more folky and experimental. He even does a couple of spoken-word pieces.

It's great to see that Gord and the Hip are getting so much love on this board. Every Pearl Jam fan should check them out. I think they'd be pleasantly surprised at the similarities between the two bands. Not so much musically, but just in overall feel and spirit.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
