Bill Bentley of Reprise Records, the singer's record label, said fans can log onto the Canadian songwriter’s website and listen to the 10-track collection in its entirety.

Bentley said consumers can download the songs, for a price, beginning May 2.

“We plan to get it into retail stores soon after that,” said Bentley. “Neil wants this album out there as soon as possible.”

The album was recorded earlier in April and contains scathing criticism of the Bush administration and its war in Iraq as well as expressing empathy with the soldiers there. Shock and Awe ridicules the administration’s conduct of the Iraq war while another song, Let’s Impeach the President, calls for Bush’s removal from office.

“You’re always going to rub someone the wrong way when you sing, ‘let’s impeach the president,’” the 60-year-old singer told the Los Angeles Times on Friday. “But that’s what this country’s all about - being able to express your views.”

Other songs mock American consumer culture, U.S. political corruption and religious fundamentalism. The album’s final song is an a cappella version of America the Beautiful.

Some lyrics are already published on his website, with more to come.

Young has tackled social and political themes throughout his 40 years in the music industry.

This album comes only seven months after his last, Prairie Wind.
