What's up with this? Is there a story? What the hell is she saying and who is she?

I have often listened to Pearl Jam on my ipod and fallen asleep. I always wake up during this song and it freaks me out. Very odd when you first wake up, very odd anyway. I hadn't listened to it in full in a long time and did yesterday. Just curious if there was a story.

Isn't it about some people who comitted suicide or something dodgey like that.
  • Eddie on the song:

"I had taped something off the tv when I was maybe 17 or something and I think it was people who had mental problems who were being let out of the hospitals early because the states were taking away funding for mental hospitals so they were setting these folks out without the necessary care but it was still very intriguing the way their mind worked and what they would say and we experimented and tried to incorporate it into what to date is our most emotional and moving song."

  • I HATE this song! I had a nightmare with this song playing the whole time. This freaky little girl was chasing me in an empty house. Then I woke up at the very end of it terrified. Is probably one of the worst dreams I've ever had. Ever since that I quickly switch albums after Immortality.
    Scary stuff.

I purposely took this song off my iPod so I wouldn't have to listen to it. I only listen to it during Halloween.

I think it ties the room...I mean album...together
  • I LOVE Foxymop :D
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • This song single-handedly put me on a PJ hiatus from when Vitalogy came out until about 99 after a friend of mine that was a diehard let me borrow Yield and No Code. I still listened to VS back then, A LOT, but I was freaked the fuck out by this song and they seemed to be going on "self-destruct mode" by ignoring all of the media and fighting ticketmaster. I feel like I lost a few years for sure, but oh well, live and learn.
    I won't change direction, and I won't change my mind - E.V.

  • Anyone ever listen to the live version? I believe they played a part of it on a bootleg called New Songs III in austrailia.

I'm pretty certain it's never been played live.
