  • I don't consider it a comeback, since "Reveal" was a masterpiece.

REM were always my 2nd fav act after PJ and up until their last record I was very happy... even really enjoyed UP and the superb REVEAL when most fans jumped ship.
However AROUND THE SUN was so bad I could not believe it,thought they were finished as a recording act.
Just great that the new one is a real return to form and such a lovely surprise.

i find reveal really bland & lifeless, massively overrated IMO, the only album i don't like from them. i think you either love it or hate it. seems to be the same for around the sun, which i LOVE.

there was a review here on the album. the first sentence was: Return to form my ass. R.E.M, have never sounded this good.

    made me laugh.

I remember when U2 made All That You Can't Leave Behind and they were labeled as sellouts for returning to their mid-80's form.

That was only because everybody on this forum hates U2. If I remember correctly, the majority of music critics gave that album the universal thumbs up. For example:

"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Oh yeah, I know the critics liked it. It is a great album. I've been listening to "New York" on it to get myself pumped for the MSG shows.

Excellent album. I think it's pretty strong throughout and the album really swings on the title track, Accelerate. While it doesn't sound anything like it, I get the same feeling from that song that I get from QOTSA's Go With the Flow and PJ's Hail Hail. Just a visceral, powerful rock song with awesome pacing.

that album isn't a patch on anything they did in the mid 80's, that's just my musical palate though.
