  • I'd say Coma by GnR. Everyone talks about November Rain as their big epic, but both Estranged and Coma shit all over it.
And Cold Cold Ground by Tom Waits.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Boots of Spanish Leather by Dylan. I mean, it's well enough known to be included in the 20th Century folk ballads section of the Norton Poetry Anthology but it's never really mentioned as being up there with his great songs.

There's something utterly magnificent about this:

"Oh, but if I had the stars from the darkest night
And the diamonds from the deepest ocean,
I'd forsake them all for your sweet kiss,
For that's all I'm wishin' to be owning"
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

Hell, yeah. I've been in love with it since it was used in an episode of Homicide years ago.

Comes a Time - Neil Young
    Cuyahoga - REM (I could list 1,000,000)
    Acrobat - U2

That's my favourite pixies song ever. Generally not a huge pixies fan, but I do love that song.

We could honestly go on forever w/ Tom Waits. Most of his songs are underrated, because HE is underrated...and I think HE likes it that way. I chose Pony because it's a personal fav of mine.
One more thing Jeremy1012, I promise I will never squabble w/ you, because a fan of Pony is a fan of mine!

These are good picks. I'd throw in STP's Glide too. Brilliant song, but it gets written off with the rest of No. 4.

I agree, I mean, there are songs on Orphans that should never have been on an odds & sodds compilation, however high the overall quality of it is. Never Let Go and Down There By The Train are two of my favourite songs EVER.

    Along with Pony :)

Still Remains is great. I was on a kick of that song a couple of weeks ago and listened to it like five times. The last song on Purple is great too, Kitchenware and Candybars, i think it's called. Meatplow, the first song on Purple is great too.

    Well said.

I saw Plant play with Allison Krausse Saturday night and it was great! He sang Black Country Woman. And at the end he said, "What's the matter with you little mama?"

    IMHO...it's their best song.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
