wondering if there are any fans here of this somewhat overlooked gem. the band themselves have complained that it was over produced. i still really love to spin this one though as i think it's a really strong album. gotta luv song #11 (Untitled) a tribute from Michael to his mom & dad while he's touring. any thoughts?

  • I always really liked Hairshirt
"If my thoughts, dreams, could be seen, they'd probably put my head, in a guillotine, but it's alright ma, it's life and life only."
  • "You Are The Everything" & "Turn You Inside Out" are worth the price of admission alone.
"Hello Oregonians. Hello Washingtonians. Hello Portland..where the fuck are we? We're in Ridgefield!"

over produced or not it's one of my favorites :)

I remember redwood trees, bumper cars and wolverines
    The ocean's Trident submarines
    Lemons, limes and tangerines
    I remember this

    I remember traffic jams
Motor boys and girls with tans
    Nearly was and almost rans
    I remember this
    History is made
History is made to seem unfair

I recall that you were there
    Golden smile and shining hair
    I recall it wasn't fair
    Recollect it wasn't fair
    Remembering it wasn't fair outside

    Low ebb, high tide
The lowest ebb and highest tide
A symbol wave I must confide
I guess we took us for a ride
    I guess it's just a gesture

    I remember this defense
    Progress fails pacific sense
    All those sweet conspiracies
    I remember all these things

    I remember traffic jams
Motor boys and girls with tans
    Nearly was and almost rans
    I remember this, this

    Low ebb, high tide
The lowest ebb and highest tide
I guess we took us for a ride
    I guess it's just a gesture

At the end of the continent
At the edge of the continent
At the end of the continent
At the edge of the continent

    great album
its the 1st R.E.M. CD i've ever listened to (it was originally my moms)
it played when i was little, and always enjoyed it
but a little while ago, after i started really getting into the band, i took a close listen and finally realized what a great CD it really was!

By no means my favorite REM album, but still pretty classic - Turn you Inside Out, World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, etc. I only dislike I Remember California and Hairshirt.

Now, what do y'all think about my #1 - New Adventures in Hi-Fi?

unfortunately, that was the beginning of the pop phase
I dont care for any REM record after Document, although they have written a few great songs, since then-like strange currencies

I basically stopped buying the records when happy shiny people came out

I liked stipe better when he covered his face with his hair and mumbled the lyrics
Is that really the same band that wrote/performed reckoning and fables??

THEY don't even like shiny happy people!

besides, out of time has country feedback & half a world away, i feel sorry for you if you've missed out on these songs because they are on a 'pop' record.

reckoning is a GREAT album though, totally agree with you on that. probably my favourite of the IRS years.

    great album.
  • i just luv the "official" video for Pop Song 89' where Stipe puts a censor bar over his nipple with the rest of the girls in the video.
  • One of my favorite R.E.M. albums.

    fair enough :)

have you listened to accelerate? i hear alot of people hark on how it reminds them of IRS style rem, i can hear it in fragments i guess, but for me it lacks the charm of those earlier albums, it just feels quite 'harsh' in comparison. just interested to hear what you think? i still haven't been blown away by that record like others have been.

same way I feel about most of the new stuff
    "its ok"
and it does have some of the same sounds, but it feels contrived
    perhaps Im old and jaded
    maybe its bill berry's absence?
