My favorite is Doc Watson. Most of his stuff is considered 'bluegrass' but in my eyes, bluegrass is folk.

For all-instrumental folk, try John Fahey.

Well, Woody Guthrie is commonly known as being the greatest folk artist of all time. His most famous song is "This Land Is Your Land" but he has thousands of others. Endless amounts of songs that man wrote. He wrote about everyone and everything he saw and encountered to share with all of us.

    Woody Guthrie
    The Carter Family
    Roscoe Holcombe
I'll second Doc Watson, and add he is more old-time (traditional mountain folk) than bluegrass (much more informed by the blues).
Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.

  • Search high and low for work by a singer songwriter called Bob Martin. He's originally from Lowell, Massachusetts.

  • Well, Woody Guthrie is commonly known as being the greatest folk artist of all time.

I think he was the all-important catalyst in 20th century folk, in the true sense, because after he became ill and inactive, his work almost on its own triggered the massive folk revival in the States and Britain, in the 1950s and 1960s, without his continued input.

Terms such as "greatest" are obviously subjective, but it's hard to underestimate Woody's impact, indirectly through other artists, even if not directly through his own recorded and performed output.
