Pink Floyd '94 Tour revisited

First off....I love Pink Floyd. One of my favorite bands.

Due to my age....the 1994 tour is the only one I was able to see. I went to 2 shows. I thought it was amazing at the time. Went to one show sober to take it all in. Went to the other show on acid to have my mind blown.

Now, I just got the Pulse DVD from that tour and watched it last night. 13 years later, I've changed my mind. Musically, that tour sucked. It wasn't real Pink Floyd. Of course, no Roger Waters....but that aside....it's the other factors that I'm looking at today.

Gilmour used some newer version Telecaster that had horrible tone. He shit the bed all over the classic solos. There are about 30 band members on stage and they are acting like cheeseballs.

Nick Mason used to be one of the best drummers in the world. He hardly lifted his arms while the other drummer did all the work.

Rick Wright needed a second keyboardist??? Lame.

The bass player is certainly no Roger Waters. He has the worst haircut of all time. Looks like he should be in Duran Duran. Plays one of those bases without a headstock.

I watch the Live at Pompeii DVD next. Now that's Pink Floyd. Just a 4 piece and the music sounds the way it should.

Can't really comment on the 94 tour I passed on that one...saw them in 87 and must say that was probably the only stadium show I have scene that I really enjoyed. Loved quadraphonic sound that they used it was amazing.

As far as live at Pompeii goes that is a fucking amazing dvd......especially echoes and the guitar solos....WOW.....The setting in that old amphitheatre is perfect also.....And I get a good laugh out of that bit where they are eating breakfast or lunch? Very Un-rockstar to say the least!

i would only attend a FLOYD show if it was just the four members of the band on stage, i was fortunate enough to see them back in 1975 and the complete WALL show i forget the year though, but i've refused to see them with their own versions of FLOYD from WATERS or GUILMOUR pumpus assess........

I saw them in 94 at Death Valley. It was awsesome.

Roger Waters is playing some shows in the US and Canada this year. Going to do some Floyd. I know he is playing Dark Side all the way through from start to finish and some "greatest hits" as well. Tickets are outrageous though.

Well, to each their own. I can understand having the extra people there to fill out the sound, and, yeah, Nick Mason didn't seem to do a whole lot. It was what it was. Since the Dark Side (well, then "Eclipse") tour in 72, the band have ALWAYS had extra people on stage. It wasn't anything new in 94. The band went in a direction where they needed to fill out their sound when playing live (obviously not an issue for 4 people in a studio setting, but even then they have other people playing on their albums- Dick Parry's saxophone being one of the more notable ones), and this trend continued for the rest of their careers. To lambaste them for that on the 94 tour is kind of ridiculous, really.

Gilmour's solo on Comfortably Numb on Pulse is still, to me, the most moving guitar solo I've experienced. Almost every time I hear it I get chills, and it almost always takes me on an emotional ride. That said, I will say he did tend to bloat his solos, and at times it certainly seemd to be the David Gilmour Power Hour. Thankfully he's toned it down a bit in his latest shows.

And if you want to see someone act like a fucking cheeseball, watch Scott Page on the Delicate Sound of Thunder video. THAT is cheeseball.

You guys are dam lucky to see Pink Floyd. I got into them when I was 15, around 93-94'. I thought about seeing them, but I lived an hour from Toronto at that time and just couldn't make it. I was like well I'll catch them next time. 13 years later and I'm still waiting. Did end up catching Gilmour once and Roger twice, but I wish I saw them in 94', and well would die if I saw them in the 60's or 70's.

And yes Live at Pompeii is sick!
  • Man, I think Pulse is one the best music DVD's ever. I am younger though (I was in the 4th grade during this tour), but I have been a fan for years now. Of course it would have been better with Waters, but even in their hey-day they still had a ton of musicians onstage with them. There is a ton of shit going on in most their songs. You should be damn glad you got to see them live twice; I would give anything for just once. Lucky bastard.

Well, I guess seeing them in 1994 is better than not seeing them at all.
