    Buddy Rich

    /thread

On spunk and personality alone, Keith gets it for me.

Part of "best drummer" for me also has to include the context of the band. There are alot of better drummers than Keith, but i don't like the bands ... and in that sense, i therefore agree with KM taking the cake.

    Besides,
how can you argue with THIS?
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?
  • Got to be Ginger Baker or Keith Moon. Though I like a lot of others too!

Who is the greatest baseball player of all time? It's one of those questions, with so many variables, that a definitive answer is impossible.

Hmmm...this is basically like the "greatest guitarist" discussion:

Phil Collins was an outstanding drummer, but not the best.

Buddy Rich was the man - otherworldly.

John Bonham was one of the best. As was Ginger Baker. As was Keith Moon. As was Bill Bruford.

    Terry Bozzio was/is great.

    Danny Carey deserves a mention.

Those are just some folks that might enter into this discussion.

true, so I'll answer with my "favorites":

    John Bonham
    Matt Cameron

and ya know, Sean Kinney always seems to stick out to me. Very unique.

Sorry, here's a couple clips of Blake Richardson

    Part 1: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6950535356627107865

    Part 2: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6722486421907281420&q=blake+richardson&total=602&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

the man has some amazing creativity on his kit.

I also forgot Dino Campanella from Dredg. Probably the most underated(or even unheard of) drummer there is out there. The man can play the drums and piano at the same time...pfft. Seeing him live is truly an experience.

Neil Peart in the context of the threesome of RUSH he's the best

    John Bonham...Hall Of Famer

Unknowns...Ted Parsons of Prong....another threesome and his sticks come through loud and clear. Prong..."UNCONDITIONAL"

Alltime favorite Mike Portnoy of DREAMTHEATER.....Mike Portnoy.."Panic Attack"

From the movie 300.."Prophets of War"

    Neil Peart vs Mike Portnoy

One of the best turn around in drumming history.

Drummers the heart of a band without them a band is dead.

Dave Lombardo is pretty damn good too.
  • phil collins? your co-worker is an idiot

john bonham. watch moby dick from the albert hall concert on the zep dvd and that is about all you should need to be convinced.

phil collins? that actually made me laugh. there's a BIG difference between "favorite" and "best"

Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

was your co-worker dropped on his head a lot as a child? :D

phil was good....some where in the top 100....say.....97...:p

and one that hasn't been mentioned that is definitely top ten all time...

    stewart copeland

    :)
  • Gotta go with Neil Peart on this one.

Seen the TV advert for chocolate with the Gorilla drumming to a Phil Collins track? The Gorilla get's my vote over Phil.
Seriously, it's impossible to say who is the best. If you could put Buddy Rich behind the kit with Led Zeppelin, I doubt if he'd cut it. If you could have stuck Bonzo in front of a big band, the same would have applied.

Matt Cameron belongs somewhere on this list.

To be a great drummer, you have to suit the band you're playing in. For me John Bonham is the greatest because of his swing and groove, but put him in a band like Tool and he would be lost IMO. Jack Irons is one of my favourites for his recorded work with PJ and RHCP - Matt Cameron for his work in Soundgarden, but in PJ he sounds totally wrong IMO.

Some more of my favourite drummers

    Chad Smith
    Ginger Baker
    Danny Carey
    Larry Mullen - very underrated
    Michael Lee (Page and Plant)
