  • david gilmour would have to be one of my favorites. he's got an excellent sense of timing and his guitar playing is just amazing. for example listen to meddle or obsured by clouds.

i dont like Malmsteen at all.he furthers the thinking that guitar playing is about being fast. all the names i put up dont play particularly fast, but the sound that comes out is something that is great..its the sound..the way it gets to the listerner..not the speed..

unless u like masturbation solo sounds then yeah Malmsteen is good. ;)

I'll quote Robert Hunter from Mickey Harts Mystery Box album to answer this question:

From the corner of my eye I saw the sun explode
I didn't look directly 'cause it would have burned my soul
When the smoke and thunder cleared enough to look around
I heard a sweet guitar lick, an old familiar sound
I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glasses and a smile on empty space
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

  • shahril i dig what you are saying and i would say that yes the guitarists listed on your top five dont always have to play fast, but your top three can really shred if they want to, cant eliminate speed altogether

for what it's worth i'll recommend one to check out if anybody feels so inclined: an aussie guy named tommy emmanuel. he has to be amongst the best in the world, or at least an honourable mention. his music speaks for itself, he's a freak talent i'd recommend to any fan of the great art of guitar playing.

my other faves as they come to mind:

    hammett
    merello
    corgan
    gilmour
    frusciante
    dimebag
    hendrix

only one mention for Stone? i'm shocked
and one of the dudes out of Slayer has a girls name?

digging the lists so far i'd say Josh Homme deserves some respect also, and Muddy Waters dont think i've seen him mentioned yet.
    also Dave Navarro
    John Squire
    and Steve Jones
