I suppose we can make this into a game, since you all seem to love playing games. I'll list 10 bands/artists that I'm really into but might be considered "unknown" or "obscure" to some, then you all can comment if you have heard them and name some of your own. Here goes:

1. The Concretes
2. Channels (more J. Robbins goodness)
3. The Life And Times (Allen from Shiner)
4. Richard Swift
5. The New Pornographers (A.C. Newman and Neko Case solo stuff is great, too)
6. The Flashing Lights (more Canadian powerpop)
7. Keren Ann (French folk pop)
8. Magnet
9. Rogue Wave
10. Camera Obscura

Now your turn.
Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

You should probably give Rogue Wave another chance before writing them off based on three songs. Giant Drag are good, and a great sense of humor. The Kills are overrated in my opinion. This thread is giving me more faith in Pearl Jam fans as fans of music in general. I only say this because a lot of them that I've met or talked to have sort of an insular view of music as a whole, i.e. being stuck on the same shit for the past 10 years and not branching out and listening to new stuff. Anyway, I'll add a few more to perpetuate this thing:

    Ambulette (Maura from Denali...so good)
Dragonforce (take all the best hair metal from the 80s and speed it up double time...the solos sound like Nintendo music)
Dungen (Swedish psych rock/pop...if you think Wolfmother rules, PLEASE check these guys out)
Stars (Canadians seem to have the market cornered on great pop rock these days)
Head Wound City (members of The Blood Brothers, The Locust, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs...severely annoying thrash, in the best way imaginable)
Johnathan Rice (recorded with Mike Mogis...this is what John Mayer would sound like if he were actually good)
Spain Colored Orange (a really talented Houston band...imagine Santana playing with The Beatles)
Des Ark (I don't even know, just listen)

P.S. Props for the Failure (and subsequent related Ken Andrews projects) mention.

speaking of The New Pornographers (and I guess mainly Neko Case), has anyone heard when the Neko Case/Sadies record/dvd is coming out. i heard it was supposed to be a live thing, so I was just curious b/c I haven't heard anything about it for quite some time.

by the way, go out and pick up The Sadies album Favourite Colours. fantastic album. only it's too short imo.

Ok, well i guess i'll make a quick list too. but i'm sure most everyone's heard of these bands by now.

    The Sadies
    Band of Horses
    The Longcut
    Nine Black Alps
Margot and The Nuclear So and So's
    Black Mountain
    Fiery Furnaces
    Comets on Fire
    Six Organs of Admittance
    The Drones

Ive heard of bands already mentioned like :

Giant drag - Got their album hearts and unicorns, its ok
Nine black alps - Heard a song called not everyone which is cool
Secret Machines - Heard about 5 songs from them and thought they were ok,
theyve got a cool video for lightning blue eyes.

    Other bands:

    The Fratellis - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=37213256

Not got enough good things to say about this band, saw them live a couple of times and they were some of the best performances id seen. They are doing pretty well just now over here, hopefully get more recognition over the coming months though.

    Kill Surf City - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=25665396

Another band i really like, 6am on their myspace is quite cool
People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.
  • I reeeeeeally hope no one here names Devendra Banhart. He's quite possibly the most overrated "musician" in the past five years, next to Jack White.

    One Less Reason.
  • 10 great ones:

    1. Billy Bragg - check out the song "A New England". folk punk at its best.

    2. The 101ers - joe strummer. need i say more?

    3. Monsters Are Waiting - a new band just starting out that has been criminally overlooked. the female lead singer has a better voice then debbie harry. the band might have some maturing to do, but the songs fascination and christine show that the future is bright.

    4. Midlake - great harmonies. great dark folk rock with a radiohead bend. Roscoe is a great song.

    5. Tapes and Tapes - I like the song the illiad.

    6. 11th Dream Day - Check out the song "lately i've been thinking" for some great garage rock. Zeros and Ones is the new album and I really like it.

    7. Guillemots - a great british band. great song writers

    8. Hot Chip - feel good electronica.

    9. Parts and Labor - stay afraid is the album to check out. an interesting noise band with great songwriting. Check out the song. "the great divide".

    10. Serge Gainsbourg - only if you are looking for something really different.
  • Kent and Mew both fucking rule. Midlake and I have mutial friends. They're good dudes.
