I suppose we can make this into a game, since you all seem to love playing games. I'll list 10 bands/artists that I'm really into but might be considered "unknown" or "obscure" to some, then you all can comment if you have heard them and name some of your own. Here goes:

You should probably give Rogue Wave another chance before writing them off based on three songs. Giant Drag are good, and a great sense of humor. The Kills are overrated in my opinion. This thread is giving me more faith in Pearl Jam fans as fans of music in general. I only say this because a lot of them that I've met or talked to have sort of an insular view of music as a whole, i.e. being stuck on the same shit for the past 10 years and not branching out and listening to new stuff. Anyway, I'll add a few more to perpetuate this thing:
Ambulette (Maura from Denali...so good)
Dragonforce (take all the best hair metal from the 80s and speed it up double time...the solos sound like Nintendo music)
Dungen (Swedish psych rock/pop...if you think Wolfmother rules, PLEASE check these guys out)
Stars (Canadians seem to have the market cornered on great pop rock these days)
Head Wound City (members of The Blood Brothers, The Locust, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs...severely annoying thrash, in the best way imaginable)
Johnathan Rice (recorded with Mike Mogis...this is what John Mayer would sound like if he were actually good)
Spain Colored Orange (a really talented Houston band...imagine Santana playing with The Beatles)
Des Ark (I don't even know, just listen)
P.S. Props for the Failure (and subsequent related Ken Andrews projects) mention.

I saw Rogue Wave at Sasquatch a couple weeks ago and I really liked what I heard. The New Pornographers are great too, and you're right about Neko's solo stuff. That woman can sing me to sleep anytime she wants.
Here are 10 of my favorites:
1. The Tragically Hip
2. Sam Roberts
3. Matt Mays & El Torpedo
4. The Weakerthans
5. Kathleen Edwards
6. The Constantines
7. Cuff the Duke
8. Joel Plaskett
9. Sarah Harmer
10. K-OS
-Tom Waits
this thread contains many bands too, they are not necessarily unheard. they may be forgotten or pushed by the wayside. SHARE THE MUSIC!

The Sadies
Band of Horses
The Longcut
Nine Black Alps
Margot and The Nuclear So and So's
Black Mountain
Fiery Furnaces
Comets on Fire
Six Organs of Admittance
The Drones

9. Parts and Labor - stay afraid is the album to check out. an interesting noise band with great songwriting. Check out the song. "the great divide".
