I just caught "Into the Mystic" on Sirius while I'm working on a particularly tedious presentation...and it just hit me, goddamn what a great fucking song that is.

Great song by a great musician.

I love songs that can sort of fade away into your consciousness only to come back unexpectedly and knock you on the head with their greatness.

Think you've just described what happened with me with Van Morrison.

The man has been a near fixture in my childhood cos my parents would play the shit out of him. It's only now that I appreciate his music, and I'm amazed by how many songs I can remember.

I first listened to Astral Weeks about 8 months ago, having previously only heard a few songs here and there. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Then I got Moondance, St Dominic's Preview, Veedon Fleece, Tupelo Honey.

Fucking incredible songwriter and musician. Astral Weeks is on another level from almost any music I've ever heard. Sweet Thing and the title track are some of the very few examples of popular music that I'd ever describe as poetry. The critic Lester Bangs wrote this legendary review:

"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

Sweet Thing is probably one of the only songs I've ever heard that's perfect in every way.

seriously.....LOVE van morrison, most especially the album, and song, mentioned above. music doesn't get much better than that. gorgeous.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

  • van morrison is extremely underrated, people erroneously think all of his songs sound like "brown eyed girl" while the truth of the matter is that his songs are really deep and were really very experimental when they were done - in my opinion his blues albums are phenomenal
9/1/2000 - E-Centre, Camden, 'Sometimes' started and I was hooked...

It really is. It's just... it's not like other music.

A while back I was in my local pub, and it's an Irish pub so they have like, the entire discography of Van on the jukebox. I put Sweet Thing on without mentioning it to anyone and then sat back down at the table and had my drink. As the song got to the "I shall drive my chariot down your streets and cry" part, my mate was just like "what the FUCK is this? this is amazing..."
