Metallica has a catalogue filled with great songs! I can go as far as to say that their catalogue is better than pj's. Now i am strictly talking music.
Can't believe how much piss they get here.I will swallow poison0 -

Eh, it's just PJ's fratboy fanbase being afraid of metal dudes."I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/080 -
I'd like to see Ed join them for Creeping Death!

If somes duders are afraid of tallitunes....Mastadon and The Sword are also on the lineup. Both are heavy as hell....hippies better brace themselves.0

i guess bonnaroo is trying to move past it's jam band roots?
While I agree that Metallica has been a shell of their former selves for quite some time now, they've been working on a new album with Rick Rubin (I think) and are probably looking to re-introduce themselves as a band who can actually bring it.
I don't think--for them--Bonnaroo is the stage to do that on. But I welcome the chance to see them perform and judge them for myself in person. It'll almost be like, "Impress me. I dare you."
And if I don't like what they're selling, there will be plenty of other things to occupy my time.

I thought the same about them playing @ bridge school last year and they were impressive.
and as you said-there are plenty of other things to do.0 -
Difficult to label them as "lame" then wouldn't you agree?my2hands wrote:not yet...
I've seen them several times and they are tremendous live. I didn't care for St. Anger, and have hopes for better with their upcoming effort, but regardless would still pay to see them play, even though Lars is a complete tool. This weekend we rock Portland0 -
the only thing that bothers me about Metallica being there is that their track record with playing the biggest music festivals for the first time hasnt boaded well for the festivals themselves...
examples:
they played Lolla... and Lolla died (true its back now.. but for almost a decade it was gone!)
they played Woodstock.... woodstock is no more...
now... that is just a little aside but i think that Bonnaroo will continue.
other than that Metallica has every right to be there... yeah they are a metal band.. but Bonnaroo was never really about exclusive jam bands...
(thats more 10kLakes) its been about the celebration of all types of music...including metal!Pittsburgh 4/26/03, State College 5/3/03, Reading 10/1/04, Toledo 10/2/04, Toronto 9/19/05, Pittsburgh 9/28/05, Cleveland 5/20/06, Pittsburgh 6/23/06, Cincinnati 6/24/06, Washington D.C. 6/22/08, Cleveland 5/9/10, Pittsburgh 10/11/13, San Diego 11/21/13, Los Angeles 11/23/13, Los Angeles 11/24/13, Oakland 11/26/13, Missoula 8/13/18, Denver 9/22/22, St. Paul 8/31/23, St. Paul 9/2/23, Las Vegas 5/16/24, Las Vegas 5/18/24, Missoula 8/22/240 -
I just don't think Metallica is right for Bonnaroo. I know they want to have a diverse lineup, but they are one of the bands I would have never expected (or really wanted) to be there.
I'm not trying to insult their music. Yes they are big and can sell out stadiums, but they just don't seem to have the right vibe for Roo.0 -

Speak the word, brother. I haven't bought a Metallica record in probably 15 years, but they are fucking Metallica man! This is a band that practically invented an entire genre of music, has played more live shows, been through more shit, and kicked more ass than most bands could ever dream of. I saw them on the Master of Puppets tour in 86 (I think) opening for Ozzy Osbourne. I was 16, and they kicked so much ass it was mind blowing. Anybody that doesn't have a least some respect for this band is clueless!I hold the pain, release me!0 -

That is my only complaint about them. I am a huge Metallica fan, I listen to them regularly. However, their music, image, and what they stand for aren't in line with Bonnaroo. Bonnaroo is typically made of up peaceful, hippie loving bands - yes, a diverse range of music is typically included (Kanye West, Daft Punk, Against Me!, Death Cab, My Morning Jacket, Phil Lesh).
I wouldn't have as much of a problem with Metallica if they didn't go on their stupid ass Napster rampage a couple years ago. Their music doesn't bother me, but I think there were more suitable headliners out there, but just them as persons I don't think should be welcome at as wonderful of a festival as Bonnaroo.Pittsburgh 6/23/06

i heard that rick rubin is producing their new album
theyre prolly getting a new direction or going back to their old sound
ill give them a chance, bonnaroo is a good place to reinvent themselves"Till there was rock you only had God"

listen, this is coming from someone who loves Metallica, everything up till reload was great, but I will be the first to say, they don't belong at roo! They are amazing live, have a huge song catalog, but come on, I don't want them there!
