Just picked up "At War With the Mystics" and I absolutely love it. I heard they are amazing live and I think they are the next band that I want to go see. Anyone reccommend some other great Flaming Lips albums?

    Get the following:

    1) Soft Bulletin
    2) Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
    3) Clouds Taste Metallic

Then start filling in the rest. Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi are essential, and probably the closest in sound to Mystics. If you have a surround sound system, pick up the cd/dvd versions of those two to hear them in all their 5.1 glory. Beyond those two its a much more guitar heavy, less synthesized sound.

  • seeing them in about a month with Sonic Youth :)

Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin are great.

Yoshimi is most like At War... so that would be a good next step. The Soft Bulletin is better than either IMO, but it is a different style so there is no telling how you will like it.

Its actually 4 people live. Since Steven plays drums, synth, and guitar, they bring an (excellent) touring drummer along. Live everything seems pretty structured as they have to use some backing tracks to get the full sound. But Wayne is such a charismatic frontman, they pull it off with ease. One of my favorite bands to see live (seeing them tomorrow night, as a matter of fact). Its as much a party as it is a show, with confetti, strobe lights, streamers, video screens, singing puppets, balloons, and dancing santas and aliens.

Oh, I will. No doubt about that. On Sunday they are filming the show at the Hollywood Bowl for a DVD release, I wish I could make that one as well.

i saw them live last sunday in Philly and wrote this in another post:

What an amazing show...just straight entertainment from start to finish. giant human hampster ball, tons of balloons bouncing above the crowd the whole time, confetti, streamers, fisheye lens in the mic (so you have a funky view of Wayne the whole time), teletubby videos, bohemian raphsody singalong...i found myself seriously cracking up most of the time.

Hey, I can give my show review. Band was great, crowd was not so great. Basically, since it was a free, all ages show after the horse races, there was a TON of people there, crowd was huge. Up front it looked great, but I was stuck near the back, and where it was a lot of pushing and talking. Ended up leaving halfway through the show, and missed the live debut of My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion'. But, it was free and the Lips, so I can't complain!

Does all of this stuff translate well in an outdoor venue? It's freakin' awesome in a club, but is any of it lost in the middle of a big field with a stage and thousands of people?

the outdoor venue in philly was actually pretty small so it translated great. i guess i could see them not being able to do this isn a big field but i bet they find a way
