Why did Soundgarden split up?

I have never been a huge Soundgarden fan as I have been a fan of Pearl Jam. I could say I give PJ a 10 out of 10 and SG about 7, but since Audioslave appeared I've had a hunger for RATM and SG music. My fiancee asked me yesterday why Soundgarden broke up, and it struck me that I do not have a clue.

Can anybody tell my why?

I remember hearing somewhere that there was lots of in-fighting between band members on their final tour. For some reason I'm lead to believe that Ben played a big part in that but I don't know or remember any details.

well, matt was quoted as saying "chris just never made me feel special anymore" and when ed promised to kiss his ass at every show for the rest of his life, he felt "it was time to make a change and be with someone who appreciated me."

I saw em on their last tour in Wolves Civic and they looked like they wanted to be anywhere else than playing a gig, no energy and a big disappoinment, even though it was a strong setlist.

    Yeah that thread hits it.

I think the biggest thing was the creative differences. Chris wanting to go in different directions and Kim wanting to pound out the hard rock grooves some more. I'm sure that coupled with the noted in fighting in particular with ben and the fact they were together for so long lead to the amicable split.

That whole thing about creative differneces came from some magazine (Rollingstone?) and as such I wouldn't place much faith in it, but I definately think that Ben was a big part of the breakup. At least in the boots from 96 they sound tired and disinterested which is a shame because DOTUS was arguably their best album. I think some of them just hated the commercial side of things?
  • Does Kim Thayil still actively play?
    Damn he was good......

Soundgardens best tour (in my no so humble opinion) was when they were in the middle of the bill between Voivod and Faith no More.
    Those shows were sick....

I read somewhere that in addition to Ben being a total dick, Chris Cornell said the band ,as a whole, were having many "rock star tantrum" moments..

    Call me biased ..
but I have to believe it was more Ben and Kim..
    than Chris and Matt's fault...

That's what broke up the original formation of Kiss
(hell yes, the pre-"Kiss Alive 2" era of the band was a mighty good hard rock act).. Ace Frehely (lead guitar) and Peter Chris (drums) were famous for their "rock star tantrums" and ruined them at their height of success..

I can't see it being kim. He seems so laid back and easy going.
