Warren Zevon

Any fans? Been meaning to check him out for years, had only heard Werewolves of London, obviously.
Got his self-titled and Excitable Boy albums yesterday and haven't stopped listening to them. Just brilliant tunes, amazing witty, offbeat, dark lyrics. Great voice.

"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

It is indeed sad what happened to him. I watched his final appearance on Letterman on youtube. Dave gave over the entire show to him and looked like he was going to cry most of the time but Zevon was cracking jokes about his cancer etc. It was pretty moving really.
Alphabetically who is the last singer songwriter to have a top 40 hit
Warren Zevon was the answer with Werewolves of London and i guessed it right.

The Envoy has some great stuff as well, though there's a few songs I'd scrap. His live album, Stand in the Fire, is excellent.
Earlier this year I read "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," which is a biography written by his ex-wife, Crystal. He did some pretty outrageous things, but there are some moving parts of the book. If you're interested in rock and roll memoirs, it's definitely worth a read.

Calamity Jane was an 80's Vegas legend - she had a band, the Cowpunks, and was heavily involved in the cocaine scene. She spent 2 years in federal prison . Her venue hosted acts including The Blasters, Nirvanna, The Black Crowes, The Byrds, Concrete Blonde, Sonic Youth, The Beat Farmers, Warron Zevon, The Wailers, Ian Hunter, Iggy Pop, the Smithereens, Buddy Guy, Marshall Tucker Band, Tower of Power and Richard Elliot to name a few.
