Any fans? Been meaning to check him out for years, had only heard Werewolves of London, obviously.

Got his self-titled and Excitable Boy albums yesterday and haven't stopped listening to them. Just brilliant tunes, amazing witty, offbeat, dark lyrics. Great voice.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

    I freakin' LOVE that song.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I got The Wind too and it's really not up to the standards of the two albums I mentioned but that's to be expected I guess. His voice is weak and he gets in a load of famous guests to help him, and some of the material is lovely but I can't help thinking that people appreciate it more for the situation it was recorded in.

It is indeed sad what happened to him. I watched his final appearance on Letterman on youtube. Dave gave over the entire show to him and looked like he was going to cry most of the time but Zevon was cracking jokes about his cancer etc. It was pretty moving really.

not a huge fan but i play trivia every week and last week the question was:
Alphabetically who is the last singer songwriter to have a top 40 hit

Warren Zevon was the answer with Werewolves of London and i guessed it right.

So we won and i'll be drinking free beer this week thanks to Warren :D

I really like Zevon. He was a terrific songwriter with the kind of dark sense of humor I admire. Excitable Boy (the album) is a classic, it would be a perfect album for me if not for Nighttime in the Switching Yard. I'd recommend that as the album to get by him before getting a greatest hits album (I do own Genius, though).

The Envoy has some great stuff as well, though there's a few songs I'd scrap. His live album, Stand in the Fire, is excellent.

Earlier this year I read "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," which is a biography written by his ex-wife, Crystal. He did some pretty outrageous things, but there are some moving parts of the book. If you're interested in rock and roll memoirs, it's definitely worth a read.

I saw Warren sometime in the 1980's at a place called Calamity Jane's in Las Vegas. From what I remember :p, it was one of the best shows EVER! They allowed us to run back and forth to the truck to smuggle in beers.

Calamity Jane was an 80's Vegas legend - she had a band, the Cowpunks, and was heavily involved in the cocaine scene. She spent 2 years in federal prison . Her venue hosted acts including The Blasters, Nirvanna, The Black Crowes, The Byrds, Concrete Blonde, Sonic Youth, The Beat Farmers, Warron Zevon, The Wailers, Ian Hunter, Iggy Pop, the Smithereens, Buddy Guy, Marshall Tucker Band, Tower of Power and Richard Elliot to name a few.
If I had known then what I know now...

    Vegas 93, Vegas 98, Vegas 00 (10 year show), Vegas 03, Vegas 06

    Seattle1 09, Seattle2 09, Salt Lake 09, LA4 09
    Columbus 10

    Vancouver 11
    Missoula 12
    Portland 13, Spokane 13
