anyone a fan? Of the music I should add, not the ideology. I don't need some touchy twat coming in here and telling me Varg Vikernes is a nazi murderer :), he's not the former and the latter doesn't affect his music adversely. I don't care about his personality, just his music. It's some of the most truly, genuinely affecting metal out there. So much black and death metal is just ridiculous and all about sad middle class white kids trying to be different. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is one of the bleakest, most oddly beautiful albums I've ever heard, right down to the ambient keyboard work and disturbing vocals.

Great stuff. so, any fans?

Oooh, sorry Jez, not my cuppa tea..but I have a buddy in Germany who is a big fan, hence I recognised the name. He has a band, very black metal they are, http://www.funeralprocession.net they may fit the one discription you gave though, but he loves it, all the same :D
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

:D yeah, it's not the kind of music I normally listen to either. I generally find most metal ridiculous and my general listening habits are jazz, folk and hip-hop but I gave Burzum a chance a while back and found that there's a certain charm in black metal if you don't treat it morally :p I enjoy it in the same way people enjoy horror films or gothic architecture. Plus, the history of it is fascinating if nothing else. Some pretty fucked up people in that scene. I'll check that band out in a bit :)

Well, you come up with the big words for me Jez, but really, how is metal any more 'ridiculous' than folk, jazz or indeed hip hop ? Just, seems to me, that's how it's viewed generally, I think metal gets a raw deal (and I'm not a metal head these days, honest..I was, during my adolesence, but not now). :D

I just mean some bands out there, even in the black metal genre that I'm complimenting, that focus more on the image and the gimmick than the music. Of course, that happens in all genres but certain types of metal are almost completely devoid of actual talent and yet still sell records. Bands like Cannibal Corpse are truly terrible and give the talented bands of the genre a bad name. This is, I agree, the same for hip-hop. I get a lot of stick from friends because I'm massively into hip-hop. They assume that means I like 50 Cent and Souljah Boy because the vast majority of mainstream hip-hop is completely shite. You just have to dig a little further to find the great stuff. With metal, I fnd that past the bands like Mastodon and Neurosis who are well known AND great, you have to dig that much further to find anything worthwhile.

Listening to Filosofem and enjoying it a bunch. He is an artist I have wanted to check out for awhile and now I am finally doing so.

I am really looking forward to the film "Until the Light Takes Us" which documents the whole Norwegian Black Metal scene. Should be interesting.

Filosofem is fucking brilliant. Especially the opening track. Such atmosphere...

Hyvis Lyset Tar Oss is still my favourite album though.
