Dinosaur Jr, C.O.C., Voivod

edited January 2007 in Other Music
Anyone into these bands? I have heard the names for years from friends who are into indie/thrash metal so i decided to buy an album from each. I did some research as to what i thought was there best work, interested to hear what other people think?

You know I think Dinosaur Jr. is kind of the odd one out of the three and I only have a couple of records but they are pretty wicked. Never bothered with the other two because they always struck me as too "metal-y"

Yeah, Dino falls more in line with stuff like the Pixies, GBV, Pavement. Sort of that group of highly influential but not terribly well known late 80's early 90's bands. They have a definite hardcore inlfluence, I think Mascis was even in a hardcore band or two, but by their 3rd album or so you could barely tell.

I think for someone tyring to get into dinosaur jr your best bets are

where ya been (probalby the easiest listen in my opinion)
you're living all over me (my favorite)
green mind (a mix between the two but not as good as either)

J Mascis melts your face with wicked solo's and crunching indie riffs. HE made doing a solo cool for indie rockers. Think neil young plugged in.

In addition to intodeep's fine recommendations, I also recommend Bug by Dinosaur Jr.

Deliverance is a good place to start with C.O.C.

Voivod has had a long & fascinating career. Check out wikipedia below for a primer.

Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, and Nothingface are my favorites.
