King Crimson is a very cool band from way back in the seventies I think or were they even kicking ass in the sixties? No I believe it was the seventies.

Released the first album in 1969....some credit them with the beginnings of prog rock. Changed line-ups every album for the next three follow-up records ("In the Wake of Poseidon," "Islands" and "Lizards") Had a fairly stable line-up (guitar, bass/vocal and drums did not change) for the three albums beginning with "Lark's Tongue in Aspic", "Starless and Bible Black" and "Red." From 1974 to about 1981 were out of business. Three kick ass albums in the 1980s. Reformed again in the 1990's and are still going.

The only constant is Robert Fripp. IMHO, the three album run starting with Lark's tongue is the best.

I heard different. I don't really know myself. I have a really good live album, but never got to it any further than that. I will do so very soon and I feel "Islands" is my best bet. If that one isn't avalable I will go for "In the court of the Crimson King" what I heard so far these apeel to me the most.

would you pick "In the court of the Crimson King" or do you prefer "Islands"?
    And more importantly why so?

The best album is probably "Red".....very dark, very hard....musically that is.

Of the two, Court is the one to go with...

    Robert Fripp is pretty awesome.

Yes but why? Tell me more about the two if you can.
Court-Greg Lake(of Emerson, Lake and Palmer) on vocals, very solid album. Robert Fripp's favorite version of the band, unless he's changed his mind recently. A large chunk of this record made it onto the four disc boxed set released in the 1990s. (don't own because so much is on boxed set, but will buy eventually)

Islands-I don't remember who's on vocals.....very uneven album. a band in flux. This album only got one cut on the four disc boxed set released in the 1990s. (own a ragged used vinyl copy from the 1970s.......do not plan on buying in a newer format)

Red-John Wetton (of later fame in Asia) on vocals and bass......very promient, heavy guitar sound when compared to the two albums mentioned above. They still play at least one tune from this album in concert. Two of the five cuts made it onto the four disc boxed set. (own an vinyl copy, a cd version and the deluxe remaster job from a years back)

You are welcome......the three albums from the 1980's are also damn good. That band is Fripp, Bill Bruford on drums, Tony Levin on bass and Adrian Belew on vocals/guitar. "Discipline" is probably the best of the lot, followed by "Three of a Perfect Pair." Very different stuff from the "Court of..." years and the band that recorded "Red."

Which one....there are several...."Absent Lovers: Live in Montreal' 1984" is probably the best that I have heard from that line-up. "Saritori in Tangier" flat out rocks on that set!!!!

21st Century Schizoid Man from the first album is one of my all-time favorite record cuts. the interplay between greg lake's bass and ian mcdonald's sax is simply incredible. i listened to this lp many times in my youth. which explains my demented ways ;)

btw, just for the record, i've got the original record. :D
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

In the Court of the Crimson King is the best Prog album I have ever heard (better than all those 70's Floyd albums)

I haven't heard much else, but I really Recommend that one. I am amazed that it was made in 1969. 21st Century Schizoid Man and the title track closer are both 10/10's.
