Eric Clapton In Concert?

So, of course, I've got a conflict this summer. Eric Clapton is in Cleveland on 5/31, while Dave Matthews Band is in Pittsburgh on 5/31. I can't decide which one to go to.

Now, I could always go to DMB in Cleveland, but all of my friends (college and high school) are going to DMB in Pittsburgh together. If I go to Eric Clapton, it'll be with my dad (and same with DMB in Cleveland). Also, State Radio is opening for DMB in Pittsburgh (both nights).

So, how is Eric Clapton in concert this year and last? Derek Trucks isn't in his band this year, which saddens me (I was really, really opening to see him play with Clapton).

This is a typical Clapton set list right now:

01. Tell The Truth
02. Key To The Highway
03. Got to Get Better in A Little While
04. Little Wing
05. Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?
06. Driftin' Blues (EC Solo)
07. Outside Woman Blues
08. Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
09. Running On Faith
10. Motherless Children
11. Little Queen of Spades
12. Further On Up The Road
13. Wonderful Tonight
14. Layla

Encore
15. Cocaine
16. Crossroads

I don't know. It should be easy - Eric Clapton, but I'm just making sure I won't be dissapointed for missing the most fun weekend of the year with my friends.

if you have never seen clapton, you have to see him. i was at night 3 of the clapton/winwood concerts at msg, and it was magical. you will be amazed at how incredible he is at guitar if you have never seen him live. you shouldn't pass up the chance to see him. you know that every summer you can see dmb, but you never know when clapton is going to tour. i say see clapton...and this coming from someone who plans to attend 6-8 dmb shows on this tour.
  • Hands down Clapton. You never know if there will be another chance to see him....DMB is on tour constantly.

Is Clapton still playing w/ Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall? I saw the show last year and it was great..

Edit: I see from your post Trucks isn't with him anymore. Either way, experience history w/ your Dad and see one of the greatest guitar players ever.

Go with Clapton. As others have said DMB tour religiously, and Clapton does not.
He hasn't changed the set at all really, I think that's the same exact set we got in Dallas in 07. It was Bad ass though. Clapton is a legened, a Hall of famer, 1/3 the greatness of Cream, Alot of those songs though are Dereck and the Dominos era songs . It a shame Dereck Trucks isn't playing with him anymore, that guy was bad ass. Is Doyle Bramhall II still playing in the band? Either way, "slowhand" will rock your socks off.

well it just depends on where you want to sit. I remember the ticketing system on TM was throwing out 3rd upper level seats only at 10am and that is all we could get, but our seats were still really damn good cause we were on the rail first row of our section and the balcony hung just in front of the stage so we had a perfect view even though we were higher up. Our seats were $90 with services charges included. My friend waited and pulled the $200 when they finally popped up and no offense to him but his seats sucked. He was lower balcony (level 1) in the very back. I really think the 3 of us that paid 90 got the better deal. Seating doesn't really matter to me as long as there is a price I find reasonable and as long as I am in the building I'm all good. So I guess what I'm saying is, the cheaper seats can be a better deal in terms of viewing the stage sometimes.

who doesn't want to sit in the first row at reasonable prices? $225 is not reasonable.

im just being devil's advocate here...which is something im good at...also worth noting the same show, that has $225 upfront tickets, has lawn tickets for $42...$42 for the lawn for ec is a deal

bottomline it's still greed on ec's part and um i'll be on the lawn, forced to the cheap seats, like i always am...

being rich has it's advantages sometimes and that ain't RnR to me...

So I am heading to see Clapton at MSG this Sunday for the first time. I know Sunday will be the first show, but does anyone know or have info as to what to expect? It doesn't seem like there is an opener? Start time says 730, just didn't know what that meant...

    Anyone have some (inside) info?

I'll be there Sunday and Monday. Gary Clark Jr and Jimmie Vaughan are the guests. Now I don't know if that means they're opening or if they'll just play with EC throughout the show. It's gonna be a great time no matter what though!

Exactly what I didn't get either! I'm guessing they will be playing with him and the band, just wasn't sure if maybe Gary Clark would open. He lists the show in his tour part on his site so who knows

NO QUESTION - Has to be Clapton. It may be your last chance, he is 71 so you never know.

DMB will be around touring every summer forever.

Gotta go with Slowhand. Sounds like DMB is more about having a party with friends than seeing the band. So do you want to party with friends or see Eric Clapton with your dad?

Clapton doesn't strike me as a person that would tour if he wasn't up to the task.

I imagine this will be a mini-Crossroads Guitarfest set up. They say start prompt at 7:30 and id be in my seat then. I'd expect JV to play a half hour, GC to play 45ish and EC to play a couple hours give or take on all thos times including a couple with each of the other guys and a big jam at the end. It's also possible GC "opens" and JV is the shorter interlude rather than a shorter opener. Either way, I'd expect 2 shorter sets with EC possibly joining each on a song then a main set with the openers mixed in.

There's no way EC can or will do a 3 hour show on his own anymore which is what a 7:30 prompt start indicates. .

Only going Monday, but can't wait.

That's hilarious. I spent four hours on my reply! Can't get that time back now.

I still think it's ok, since EC is touring now. Heard he is putting on a great show. Playing about 80-90 minutes.

Saw him last night at MSG, great show. Jimmie Vaughn opened at 730, played until 8. Gary Clark Jr killed, played from 815-9. Then Clapton played from 920- close to 11 I think. First time seeing Clapton and he did not disappoint! Played everything you'd want to hear and sounded phenomenal. Minimal crowd interaction which is fine, but he brought out GCJ and JV for the final song, then walked off stage with house lights still down, stayed down for about 30sec, then came back yp and show was over. Anticlimactic close, but great show

And now I'm starting to think that they weren't supposed to sell us the LA print. Here's what happened. So, on Sunday night we didn't have access to the Chase VIP Lounge at MSG so we just went to the regular merch line. We saw both posters presented but the guy told us that only the MSG print was for sale. So we each bought one of those. Then on Monday night we did have access to the Chase VIP Lounge and they had a little merch area set up and had both posters displayed again, but this time the LA poster had a price on it. So we each bought one of those. But now I see that the MSG print run was 900 and the LA run was only 600... So if we bought two of the LA's at MSG and who knows who else bought one from the Chase lounge, then there may not be very many left for LA fans. I checked the artist's site (Adam Pobiak) and he said he won't have AP's available until late May to early June. Yet these ones that we bought at the show are signed and numbered, so I don't know what's going to be different about his AP version other than maybe a colored variant. Strange stuff...

This weekend's LA shows have been cancelled as Eric Clapton battles bronchitis. They've been rescheduled for September 13th and 18th.
