I Didn't Know Patti Smith's Mom Died :(

Finally getting around to watching all of this years Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. A great thing to do at 1 in the morning on a Sunday.

But I had no idea that Patti Smith's Mom had passed away.

It was maybe 10 years ago. Right around the time I'd gone off to NYU, right after Allen Ginsberg had died. That's when I discovered Patti's work, in a time that was like a blizzard of amazing art entering my life, all at once.

So, I found an address where I could write her (Patti), and so I sent her a letter thanking her all she'd done for rock and roll, and all the amazing artists and authors her work had turned me on to.

It was maybe a month or so later, that I got an autographed (in blue ballpoint pen) 8 x 10 picture of Patti back in the mail. Nothing else, just that picture.

But it was more than enough.

I'd learn, a few years after that, that it was Patti's Mom who answered all the letters that listeners wrote her.

And it's just weird, now, to think about how there was this woman who took the time to reply back to me, on behalf of her daughter, and now to think that she's not around anymore.

It's cliche to say, but I hope she's in a better place.

And I'm grateful for the time she took out of her life to help improve mine.

Just wanted to share... somewhere. Have a good night, everybody :).
