  • In Rainbows - for Radiohead is a good start and then maybe the older stuff like The Bends, Pablo Honey, and OK Computer. I am not a huge fan but I do like their music and they are amazing live.

Ben Harper is a tough one. I don't really like any of his studio stuff, but he is an amazing live performer..... I guess my favorite CD would be Both Sides of the Gun. His newer stuff (Lifeline) is a little more mellow.
  • The question of where to start is a tough one, and I would really struggle to answer this question for some of these bands, but I have a couple of suggestions...

Neil Young - I started with Freedom, but I really think that Live Rust would be a great way to get into his music.

Bob Dylan - Wow...where to start?... There are a lot of people who would say Blonde on Blonde, but I'm not sure. He's written so much and shaped the music landscape so much that it's hard to start with just one album. Maybe a greatest hits CD?

The Who - I started with Tommy, but I know people who would fight tooth and nail for Quadrophenia

Bruce Springsteen - Maybe the River... again, lots of great ones though

Ben Harper - Welcome to the Cruel World

    The Ramones
Social Distrotion - I think a new one (Sex, Love and Rock and Roll) would be good to start with.

REM - Automatic for the People...without a doubt the best place to start (although, it will be hard for anything else to live up to it's greatness!)

Again, it's all subjective, but there's my 2 cents anyway.

    Enjoy

The Strokes-either of the first two records are solid, the third one is really good but different for the strokes

Neil Young-depends what you want, I like anything from 70-75 really Zuma and tonight's the night are fantastic

Bruce Springsteen-born to run is the single greatest rock and roll record in history.Darkness is pretty good too

Social Distrotion-I'd say the last 2 or the self titled, prison bound is weak though,

REM-again depends on if you want 80s college rock REM or 90s "alt rock" REM, long story short just ask sadprofessor

The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth
    Radiohead - In Rainbows
    Neil Young - Ragged Glory
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
    The Who - Quadrophenia
Ben Harper - Fight for your Mind
    REM - Accelerate

Just some suggestions - can't say they are the best, but you can't go wrong with any of these albums.

For Neil I'd say buy all his cd's and for Dylan also get The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde.

The Strokes - Room on Fire -- Some perfectly crafted pop songs here...

Neil Young - Live Rust -- Nice live mix of Neil plugged and unplugged.

Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks -- Dylan at his best.

The Who - Live at Leeds -- Audio proof that indeed The Who were maybe the best live rock band of the late 60s/early 70s.

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run -- A masterpiece.

The Ramones - Mania -- Awesome compilation!

REM - New Adventures in Hi-Fi -- Overlooked and under-appreciated. Energized and live-feeling as the majority of the album was recorded during soundcheck on the Monster Tour.

    Wilco:

If you're open to live albums, you need to get Kicking Television: Live in Chicago.

Otherwise, the studio albums are all fantastic and each one sounds completely different from the next. Feel free to choose at random.

Agree 100% about Kicking Television, one of the best live albums in my collection.

I am partial to starting with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot because it is such a masterpiece, but all studio albums are fantastic!

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run is the greatest rock alum, save maybe for Sgt. Pepper's. You won't regret it. At all. Also, download Dancing In The Dark, No Surrender, Darkness On The Edge of Town, Atlantic City, & Lonesome Day. I LOVE Bruce.

Radiohead - the Bends then Ok Computer. If you like that, Kid A. I do like Bodysnatchers, though, and the rest of In Rainbows...

Neil Young - Everybody Knows... & Live Rust. Shows you at his peek and his great songs. Also get the songs Old Man, Heart of Gold, Like A Hurricane, Cortez the Killer, Fuckin' Up...
    Pittsburgh 6/23/06
    Madison Square Garden 6/25/08
  • If you are really trying to get into Radiohead you should start with OK computer. It's not that I don't like the Bends because I friggin love that album, it's just that nothing in there catalog has sounded like that album since then.

If you listen to the Bends it will not help you get into newer Radiohead imo.

Start with Pablo Honey...then you can hear how much growth between that and The Bends. It's truly amazing.

It's like going from "Love Me Do" to "Sgt. Pepper's"

For Neil Young, I'll second the suggestion of Harvest Moon - that's where I started. Another Neil album that I absolutely love but that is hated by almost everyone is Sleeps With Angels. Finally, you can't go wrong with a Neil Young live album - I haven't heard Live Rust, so I'd suggest going with Weld.

I haven't heard this particular show, but you make a good point there. There is TONS of live Wilco out there to be downloaded at no cost.

Here's another great place to start:

I would recommend a show from '97 to anyone interested in becoming acquainted with the first couple albums. They played some very entertaining concerts that year.
