are you kidding me, another top 10 of 90´s....

    1. Ten, pearljam
    2. Nevermind, nirvana
    3. Core, stone temple pilots
    4. Dirt, Alice in chains
    5. Superunknown, soundgarden
    6. The colour and the shape, foo fighters
    7. In Utero, nirvana
    8. Purple, stone temple pilots
    9. Yield, pearljam
    10. Siamese dream, smashing pumpkins

    especial mentions:

Sixteen tones and Razorblade suitcase, bush
    Human clay, creed
    Nirvana, mtv unplugged
    Alice in chains, mtv unplugged
    No.4, stone temple pilots
    VS, pearljam
  • the majority of these lists are not making any sense. This guy was asking for the best alternative albums of the 90's and i'm seeing Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Collective Soul, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews, STP, RATM. In the 90's these guys were like the mainstream superstars....Pearl jam/ nirvana being the mainstream of the mainstream.

    excellent point.

And now, to try and match Todd76's awesome list....;)

    in no order

Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over Sea
    Mr Bungle - Disco Volante
    The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
    Boredoms - Super Ae
    Fugazi - Red Medicine
Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
    Spoon - Series Of Sneaks
    Tortoise - Tortoise

Actually, bringing it down to 10 was impossible. These 10 just came to mind.

    I agree completely.

BTW, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice.. WERE the alternative.. esp. in 1991.. they killed hairmetal. Granted they were a reluctantly mainstream alternative.. The definition of that word is constantly changing.

I am so glad I got a chance to see them live Back in Aug 1996. The Cranberries put on a great live show, and toad the wet sprocket opened.

Alternative 90s, eh? that's half my back-catalogue :) Only 1 album pr band, well, here goes.

Pearl Jam - Yield (had to agonize a bit there)
    Soundgarden - Superunknown (their masterpiece)
Alice In Chains - Dirt (RIP Layne)
Nirvana - In Utero (I like this the most. A lot more oomph, edge and insanity than critic fave Nevermind)

That takes care of the seattle scene. Now for other "alternative" cds. I will apply the term liberally.

System Of A Down - System Of A Down (Schizophrenic and overflowing in a good way)
Incubus - SCIENCE (good funky thing going that declined over following albums)
Faith No More - Angel Dust (Patton's masterpiece in my eyes)
Tool - Ænima (truly a timeless masterpiece, and I count it alternative)
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie (double cd with everything. A little bit for everyone.)
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine (Classic righteous RAGE)

That's my list. But that's 10 records from what makes up over half my sizeable collection. Many hard choices there.

(edit) Damn, no room for NIN in there and many others worthy of mention. I refrained from mentioning Motorpsycho, as few of you have heard of them, but they should definitely be on the list. Ach, what's done is done.

    Peace
    Dan
