Just saw the Black Crowes for the first time...wow

Wanted to share with you my experience as a first timer. I'll set up by telling you where I come from. I lost touch with the Crowes shortly after 3 Snakes, somehow lost the CDs and never followed them since, but always acknowledged they were really good. For some reason got excited about what I was hearing about Warpaint so I got it and loved it. I had to see if they were comingto town, and instead of seeing a date for Dallas proper I saw that they were playing the "Taste of Addison"...what the hell are the Crowes playing a suburb food festival for? I know they can still sell tickets? But I was told by everyone I talked to that this was a very quality setup. Daughtry played there last year, not that I care for his ilk, but he's somewhat of a big name draw so I knew it would be a decent stage and all. So for the past 6 weeks I've completely reacclimated myself with the Crowes, re-purchased all of their discs including the ones I never bothered with (BYS & Lions). So I had fallen back in love with the Crowes and was excited to finally see them. Now, I'm a huge, huge Pearl Jam fan, so I'm aware of the big quality rock band that has fallen off the radar for most people but is still out there playing great live showes and releasing great music. I knew going in that like PJ, the Crowes have plenty of hits but feel no obligation to pander them to any crowed even if it's a festival, because their entire catalog kicks ass b-sides and all. So while I really wanted to hear Sometimes Salvation, Wiser Time, and Remedy, there was a good chance I would be hearing the lesser known stuff, which is 100% cool with me, because while I may not know all the track names, I love all the songs and know they would be great live. I was so excited and felt like I was getting a chance to see greatness that I had previously neglected. As soon as they hit the stage this awesome breeze came through and I've never seen so much hair blowing, but they looked really cool on stage, like I was seeing Stillwater. I was excited to hear them follow the opener with Wiser Time, and other than that and a track from Lions that I recognized, everything else was from Warpaint, SYMM & Southern Harmony. Man they were so great, several of the songs were extended and they just sounded like old school rockers that knew exactly what they were doing. It was such an amazing experience, I was so glad that I got the chance to see them even if it was for a 90 minute festival set. Every damn song sounded so cool and so good. I don't know the players very well butI really dig the bass player, and of course Chris, despite doing this for so long, still gets off during every jam. His voice was great. I read another review that had some critiqued a late solo here and another glitch there, which I understand because I notice those things with PJ, but for me they were flawless. I'm pretty down that they aren't coming back to Texas in 08, so I might have to go up to Tulsa. I am a renewed die hard Crowes fan, os I have many years to make up for. I'll be in L.A. this weekend and will be makingg a trip to Amoeba Records to stock up on whatever crowes stuff they have that I don't (BW w/ Paige was there last time). I'll also be looking for as many downloads of shows that I can find, from what I understand there's plenty out there. Just thought I'd share.

Thanks for the review. I never got into the Black Crowes until Warpaint. No reason at all; I guess it just happens that you never take time to listen to a good band. Anyways, I first heard Warpaint on the internet, I love it so I went out to buy the cd. Bought Southern Harmony a few days later. I know someone who was able to get me good tix to the Toronto show, so put in my request and got front row centre!

I'm glad to hear a good review of their show. The show I'm going to is on a Saturday night in July - the night before my 30th birthday : )

Good for you for digging into the Crowes again. "Warpaint" is a great album and yes, the brothers Robinson can still rock it like they mean it.

I saw them earlier this year in Los Angeles when they were doing their "One Night Only" shows and it was so good. How Good? THIS GOOD!.

And have a great time at Amoeba. That place is so dangerous; a body could easily spend their entire economic stimulous check in there!

Ive always loved the Crowes.....Was very sad to see Marc Ford not in the band...but saw them on the one night stand tour in L.A and they blew me away!!!!

Luther Dickinson is a monster guitar player....and arguably a great replacement for Marc Ford....hes much moire steeped in blues as Marc was steeped more in Southern rock stylings.

awesome man, thanks for the suggestion, this looks awesome. i never listened to the black crowes until recently, don't know why, just never heard any of their stuff besides a few tunes. i'm loving them now.

I have seen the Black Crowes about 10 times so far... they never cease to amaze me... they are so tight... i have tickets to see them at the end of October in NYC and the first week in November in NYC which will be an all accoustic show... Cant wait...

I was at the Taste Addison festival too. Took my wife and 10 year old son. It was his first rock concert. He had a blast. It was freaking hot for awhile but cooled down nicely. I had to explain to my son what "that smell" was a couple of times. Hey, it is the Black Crowes after all.

The Crowes were tight. I was expecting them to play nothing but hits since it was a festival and most people there had only heard of She Talks To Angels, Jealous Again, etc. They only played 90 minutes but it was a good mix of hits and new stuff. I was glad to see the kept the long jams in. It took them about 25 minutes to get through the first couple of songs. I figured wih limited time, they would cut that back. I was glad I was wrong becuase the jams are the best part of the show.

Oh Josephine was a highlight for me as that is my favorite song from the new record.

I've said it on here many time, the Black Crowes are my 2nd favorite band next to PJ and sometimes they pull even, especially after a killer show. Luther is great, but I really don't like Adam. I miss Weird Ed.

I've seen them twice. Once on the Southern Harmony tour in Austin (Marc Ford on lead) and then a couple years ago when they first got back together after the off years... (again with Marc Ford)

They're fucking great. Period.

I may get stoned to death for saying this on this board, but having been to hundreds of rock shows, the Crowes in 93 is the best live show I've ever seen (PJ is 8 of the next 9 or so on my list, haha) and they rocked just as hard a couple years ago too. Warpaint is their best record since Southern Harmony, which is itself one of the best rock albums of the last 25 years, in my opinion.

And I'm not even a die-hard Crowes fan. They just are capable of putting out incredible albums when they really want to and their live show is... well as I said before, fucking great.

Glad you got back into them and had such a good experience at the show. Good thread...

Anyone who doesn't have Brothers of a Feather definitely needs to get it....RIGHT NOW! Be sure you get the cd/dvd version. You won't be able to stop listening or watching

Sure fuckin' is. My little brother and I had tickets to see that tour at the Gorge before Page hurt his back and cancelled it. To this day I swear, if I ever see Jimmy Page, I will push him down and kick him in the back.

I saw them live twice and only 1 song was repeated. Great shows both times...however the first was in a smaller setting and I got up close so it was definitly better.

The Crowes absolutely rock! Your story sounds somewhat similar to mine, however I had rediscovered these guys back in 2001 when they had released Lions and were touring in support of that album. Saw them in SF that year and about a month after seeing them they went on their hiatus..lol. Since then I've had the pleasure of seeing them 11 more times and I'll be adding another 5 more shows to that total in Dec. when I catch them at the Fillmore.

Glad that you were able to rediscover this band as well! Enjoy and share the ride!

Too bad you missed the band with Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch. If you are saying "wow" after seeing a second rate version of the band, then you are lucky.

Luther Dickinson would be lucky to keep up with Marc Ford.

I only have the debut, By Your Side, and Warpaint(though I admit, I haven't really listened to it yet).

Crowes were my first ever rock concert. Seen then maybe 6 times over the yrs. Always a great and fun show. They jam alot and just have fun.

If you enjoy night one, you'll almost certainly enjoy night two. The Crowes mix up their sets as much, if not more, as Pearl Jam. I really wanted to catch some of the recent Crowes shows in my area, but I'd already invested too much $$$ on getting 3 nights of Pearl Jam tickets last month.

It's a shame the the Crowes lost out on my hard earned dollars, but such is the price for being my SECOND favorite touring band. Oh well, luckily I still have all those great bootlegs to get me through until their next go around.

They are hitting Borgata in October. I'm gonna try one of the 2 shows after that one or both of the next 2.

oops, forgot, they also have a 4-night gig in New York City around Halloween time.

Get thee hence and procure a copy of The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion - their best by far and quite possibly a perfect rock 'n' roll record from beginning to end.

And from someone who has seen them almost 15 times, they mix it up like no other and pick some really obsure covers too.

You should be there! Crowes kick ass live .....and at the Orpheum you know its going to be amazing .......its going to be my third time seeing them and my gf first!

I also highly recommend Amorica. My personal fav although Southern Harmony is a very close second.

Just saw them a week and a half ago and they played some pretty obscure songs and covers. It was an amazing show but I actually heard people complaining after that they didn't get to hear the 'hits'. Makes me sad that they didn't recognize the amazing performance that they had just seen. I was personally blown away and wouldn't have changed one thing. Never miss an opportunity to see the Black Crowes!

Yeah, Amorica is right there too. So many great songs on that album.

Dallas tickets go on sale Friday. Can't wait! This will be my 4th time to see them in just over a year.
