Nick Drake is amazing. He was an incredibly talented guitarist. A lot of his songs are actually pretty hard to play. I would reccomend working backwards through the albums. Get Pink Moon first. Then Bryter Layter. Lastly, Five Leaves Left. Then if you still have a craving, Made to Love Magic (an unreleased, re-mix album). "Which Will" from Pink Moon is currently one of my faves. Also, "Saturday Sun" from Five Leaves Left.

If you like Nick Drake, check out Iron & Wine (neck and neck with PJ as my fave). Also Jose Gonzalez. And obviously, Elliott Smith, who I'm sure you're more familiar with.

Yup, love Nick Drake ... Such great, emotional music ... Listening to Bryter Layter now. Pink Moon is prolly my favorite album.

    When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
    When the day is done.

    When the day is done
Hope so much your race will be all run
Then you find you jumped the gun
Have to go back where you began
    When the day is done.

    When the night is cold
Some get by but some get old
Just to show life’s not made of gold
    When the night is cold.

    When the bird has flown
Got no-one to call your own
Got no place to call your home
    When the bird has flown.

    When the game’s been fought
You speed the ball across the court
Lost much sooner than you would have thought
    Now the game’s been fought.

    When the party’s through
Seems so very sad for you
Didn’t do the things you meant to do
Now there’s no time to start anew
    Now the party’s through.

    When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
    When the day is done.

Day is done of Five Leaves Left

    Thank you Nick, RIP!
RIP Syd ... Shine on you crazy diamond ...
  • I like Nick's music. I know people who knew him when he lived in Cambridge. He wasn't always moody and depressed, apparently. One friend of mine, much older than I am, saw him playing an impromptu set at some place off West Road in Cambridge in about 1968 or 1969: Before "Five Leaves Left" was released, anyway. What was interesting was that Nick wasn't playing his songs on a guitar. He was using somebody's four string electric bass. And he seemed to be enjoying himself, too.
