I'm referring to the rapper Trick Trick, who doesn't want homosexuals buying his records.....

  • Well I'm not homophobic and I'll never buy a record by a guy called 'Trick Trick' anyway. ;)

Seriously though, no surprise that a rapper is homophobic. Loads of them are, as are a shitload of ragga artists.

    True.

I guess stuff like this still shocks me a little....

I watched a documentary which highlighted the homophobia in ragga music. They interviewed a bloke called Method Man.... one of his songs is called something like 'Burn the Batty Man'.

  • He's just an ignorant fool - and until I read this, I didn't even know who this guy was.

The irony is that the potential exposure the mass media may give him for making these comments will drive sales with the controversy curiousity crowd. That even includes message board posts like your Crop...few of us would even know about this without your post. And the mass media would be unlikely to pick up on it without the buzz that may come from message boards and blogs.

Let's not forget that everytime any controversial album, movie or show is released, the audience grows exponentially AFTER it starts to be reported. This is how early releases from NWA and 2-Live Crew, for example, went platinum with virtually no radio or video support and little fanbase outside their local markets.

Hmm.. seems like a lot of effort to go to. Why not just make music which isn't shit? ;)

Haha! I"m not saying this was their promotion plan...I'm just saying highlighting it has always proven to promote it. This has been going for decades. Sales increase drastically whenever the media or some watchdog group takes off with some controversy issue.

Tipper Gore wanted Parental Advisory stickers to curb sales and labels couldn't wait to put the sticker on their releases because it drove sales. C. Delores Tucker and others destroy cd's in the streets, and people can't wait to find out what was on those cd's that caused all the ruckus. Ozzy, Marilyn Manson, Eminem...the list goes on forever. Hell, even Elvis benefited from the controversy factor!

I'm just saying, let's ignore these stupid fucks instead of walking them to a soapbox and handing them a megaphone.

It's kinda catch 22, as it could be argued that shit like this should not be ignored and accepted in the 21st century.....

I do agree with you on that. Shit like this shouldn't even exist in the 21st century. :(

I think you're getting confused. Method Man is a New York rapper from the Wu-Tang Clan, not a ragga artist. You're thinking of Beenie man.

To be honest, it's rife in Jamaica as a cultural thing, especially amongst these musicians who practice rastafarianism. Until things change on a much bigger scale, these sentiments aren't offensive to them, they're just staying true to their faith. It's wrong but they're ignorant and unenlightened, not evil.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

Yeah it does. Although that's part of my argument about racism (let me just note that I'm not calling you a racist, lol). If this guy was a rockstar, it'd be chalked up to HIM being a homephobic prick, but few people would be talking about it giving rock n roll a bad name. But controversial rap always seems to take on life as being representative of all rap and hip-hop culture...and ultimately, black people. Same happens with pro athletes, actors, and soon enough: presidents.

Yeah but faith is one thing. I was born into an Evangelical Christian family so I know their views. These song titles are outright miltantism.. 'Burn the Batty Man?' Sounds like the KKK. Seems to go way beyond ignorance, no? I mean I've known Christians who are unhappy with homosexual practice but no-one I know is looking to burn them at the stake.

Most def. One of the incidents that's always gotten to me is the need to identify Body Count's (awful) heavy metal song, Cop Killer, as "rapper Ice-T's Cop Killer."

You're so right though...once this grows legs, it will be awful for hip-hop. :(

I didn't know Batty meant that?
    NERDS!
  • I didn't know Batty meant that?

'Batty Boy' or 'Batty Man' is a 'gangsta' slang term for a gay man in Jamaica and England.. I'm not sure it's used in USA though.

'Batty' to me means the original thing... nuts or crazy... a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
