  • Extremely politically charged. I've only had a chance to give it one and a half listens...a few songs I just don't care for, but Nas is pretty much on fire for this record. His response to/rant about Fox news is incredible, except that nobody told him that NY's local "Fox 5" isn't the same as "Fox News Channel."

Dont expect it to be as good as Illmatic, but this is definitly his best in a long time. Its nice to hear some political stuff from him. I hope other big name rappers follow him and discuss more real issues.

The beats arent as flashy as usual which leaves the focus on his rhymes- which is what I think rap is all about.

hero is far and away the best song on there and overshadows the entire rest of the album. the rest is ok. not bad, but not great. the production and beats are a little overly slick. nas's lyrics are definitely politically charged, but some of them become absurdly preachy or heavy-handed. it's an ok album. but then, i rather liked hip hop is dead and street's disciple, which seem to be pretty unpopular albums, so maybe i'm way off base.

The best rhymes can fall flat with shitty beats. A fact highlighted by most of Nas' post-Illmatic work really :o

I don't know man...Breathe and Make the World Go Round are "overly slick" like you said, but that's it. I'd say Hero borders on being overly slick, and is by far NOT the best song on this record.

Queens Get the Money - Very sparse piano, no drums

You Can't Stop Us Now - Dirty as fuck

America - Track is a pretty weak

Sly Fox - This is hard as hell

    Testify - Almost ballad like

N.I.*.*.E.R - He's going for a real big sound on this...it should have built to something more

Untitled - This could have been very subdued and atmospheric, but a neck snapping drum track makes it very interesting

Fried Chicken - Something about it doesn't work for me overall, but the live instrumentation is great throughout

Project Roach - Very jazzy, very unslick

Y'all My Ni**as - This borders on being too slick

We're Not Alone - Very chill with live keys and an r&b hook, but again not very slick

Black President - Lots of layers going on here...the piano, the hard hitting bass and drums, a great Tupac vocal sample...and again nothing like the slick production on the tracks at the top of the album.

There really are only 3-4 out of the 15 tracks that can be considered slick production, and because 3 of them appear in the first 5 tracks, it can give a bad first impression and overshadow how you listen to the album.

i suppose that's possible. it might be a bit front-loaded with weak r&b type crossover tracks. that america song kinda sucks. i do find myself getting kind of addicted to it, and usually that's a good sign. if i have the initial "i dont know about this" but then keep going back for more, i usually end up really liking it.
