  • it's REAL nice to see neil open the vault. i bought that massey hall toronto dvd/cd package that came out yesterday...started to listen to it today...about 4 soungs in he says that "the show will mostly consist of new songs"...then he tells a small story and picks the first few notes of old man...instant goosebumps. the man is god.

having said that i love how there was so much negative reaction to neil playing/touring all of greendale before it had been officially released...people were bitching that the show was advertised as neil and crazy horse and that it was false advertising...at least until the very end of the show, when they broke out those old classics...i wonder if people bitched back then at the massey hall show, like they did today...

personally speaking i go to live shows in hopes of hearing/experiencing songs that i don't know. but thats just me...

good call on greendale. I went to that tour and was pissed at the fans who were upset. Mostly older fans who came to see the "hits" not "real" neil fans who came to see him perform.

I personally was overjoyed and still remember the first time i heard bandit and more importantly when he closed the set with Be the Rain a song that no one had ever heard but still the crowd was chanting along with him with all this energy he created. It was a great experience.

ya i still couldn't beleive that a lot of people were pissed at neil for touring greendale BEFORE the cd hit the shelves. weird stuff...especially cause greendale was, from top to bottom, an AMAZING cd and so brilliant in every way.

i try to imagine if pearl jam did a tour and played a whole bunch of new songs, not yet officially recorded, how people would react. i hope it wouldn't be the same reaction as what neil got.

having said all this i wish pj would road test more of their new material before comitting it to cd...its not like im gonna complain if they don't, but the feeling a big fan gets when brand new unheard music is played live is bordering on pure exctasy, at least for me...the new stuff is always where its at.

but to stay on topic...lol....yeah to neil's vault! we need more!!!!!!!!

    neil's the best there is.

I love those older versions of Old Man where its quiet at the beginning and you can hear the guitar intro. Its so familiar now and people applaud through it, it's almost like they applaud because he's playing Old Man and its an expected thing to do, rather than really appreciate the moment.

This DVD is amazing. Not just the show itself and all the ranch footage, but there is a ton of extras on there too. If Neil has this kind of footage from '71 available, whatever show he ends up releasing from the Tonights the Night era tour should be incredible.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

  • i have to agree with everyone about the greendale tour. i could feel the crowd getting restless during that show, but i looked at it as a once in a lifetime oppotunity. it's not like we're going to get to see that stage show with all the characters and have it all be fresh like that again. that show was amazing, and like intoodeep said, i'll never forget that being the first time i heard all those songs...especially bandit...and people really started getting into be the rain at the show i saw too.

i was watching the BBC show from the 70's yesterday and it's still so strange to hear neil say...this is a new one, then play old man, or heart of gold...at one point he says "here's something else that's happening..." or something along those lines, then starts into a man needs a maid...wow!

    to sum up...archives!!! :D

I haven't stopped listening to Massey Hall since I got it. I was a bit surprised by the DVD.....they show a recording machine on stage for a lot of the songs. Just thought I was going to see Neil most of the time.

I love Neil and I'm so stoked about the Archives...I'm totally with the folks who have talked about the Tonight's the Night material, that's probably my favorite Neil album. Anybody heard anything about a release date?

And I thought it was so cool the way Neil stopped and showed that guy how to play Cinnamon Girl.

I'm assuming its because they didn't have footage of those points. I thought it was a cool way of filling in the gaps, having the guitars and mic stand set up. Judging by how complete Neil is, those are probably the guitars he used that night, and if not the exact mic, I"m sure its the same model.

  • So "see the sky about to rain" is on the massey hall performance?

Didn't On The Beach come out in like 75? Guess that one was sitting around for awhile.

if you look closely, it appears that the video is not from the same performances as the songs. some finger movements/lyrics don't synch up. i think over on the neil young list they figured out that it is from another show on the same tour.

but still a cool watch! the footage from the ranch is from a german documentary, "swingin mit neil young" that i have on a vcd. it's really cool, with shots of neil sitting around his house stoned out of his mind singing "out on the weekend" on banjo and cracking himself up.

I've got 615 new messages in my 'Rust' inbox, I'm way behind my reading there!

I think he played 9 songs in the set that were not released or something like that. Neil always seems to have songs just laying around which is kind of cool :)

That's like Wonderin' from the Fillmore release. I think that's the one where he says it'll be on the next album, and it doesn't show up on an album till Everybody's Rockin' in 1983. I think Neil has a perverse sense of humor that way.
