Opeth's new one: Watershed

Fans of Opeth, what do you think of the new release, Watershed? I have listened to it a few times through and an getting into it more and more -- Coil and Hessian Peel are my faves early on. If you've got a 5:1 setup, crank the first track and enjoy!!! That guitar is tuned so nice...it just sounds beautiful!

The new guitar player is a bit of a shredder, don't you think? His playing is the biggest difference in their sound. Love the wind-down on Burden!

I also like the way they release the album with the video package...gives a lot of insight into the arrangements and new members!

Money is tight for me this week.

I'm getting it tomorrow when i get paid.

I heard they recorded 3 cover songs in the studio while recording the album one of which was Alice In Chains song WOULD

I REALLY want to hear that.

I'll be cranking Watershed after my Direct Deposit hits tonight!

I love it. Opeth is one of my favorite bands, and I have been playing this one non-stop. The special edition with the DVD is definitely the way to go not only for the video, but for bonus tracks and especially the 5.1 version of the album.

The AiC cover is not featured on the deluxe edition -- it comes on a disc sold with the vinyl version. A Robin Trower song, Bridge of Sighs, is. I've never heard the original but I like their version -- he does some cool stuff with his voice on it that fits so well with the bluesy style of playing. There's also another Opeth original and one other cover song I have never heard. These extra tracks are DVD audio only (bummer) -- you cannot play on a standard CD player or convert directly to iTunes. You can buy from iTunes...but then all you have is 128kbps sh*t. The documentary and 5:1 mix is really worth the few extra bucks.

Transplant and Intoo -- Both you guys are cool for picking this one up -- you won't be disappointed!

I don't have a home audio system worth a damn, so it will be iTunes for me.

LOL. Yeah, I preordered Watershed from TheEndRecords with Vinyl, the special edition cd, autographed booklet,etc... and it shipped with a CD Single of the Mellotron Heart. Not metal, but an interesting rearrangement of the song!

Yowza! I would've been all over that edition if I knew about it -- are you on a mailing list from Opeth or something? I should start reading a little more carefully when I go to their site. I believe that version is sold out by now. I saw that someone posted a bunch of photos of that special edition in another forum yesterday -- totally sick!

I need to let this sink in. I am a little to excited about it. I spun it all weekend. It is very rare that I would find a bands 9th? release as a favorite, however what I love about this is it encompasses everything that this band is about. I find this to be Akerfelt's strongest vocally.

So once the excitement settles down, I'll see where I place this thing of beauty. As of now, I wouldn't hesitate recommending this to a complete Opeth noob.

    I am enjoying the album.

It is not as crushing as i hoped but maybe i'm just not catching it. I mean it has its moments that is for sure.

Not a let down I think i need to just wrap myself around it a little more.

    Solid through and through
"A consistently good band works all the different elements well. A song has to appeal sentimentally, intellectually, physically, viscerally, and dig deep down into your soul and suck you into it. And after that, of course, it'd be a matter of taste." ~ Kim Thayil from Soundgarden

    depends...

If you consider yourself a metal head...Blackwater Park
    If you don't...Damnation
If you like yourself a little variety of both...Still Life, though I will still say this new one Watershed isn't a bad start AT ALL.

just understand, this isn't your typical metal band. They are sort of a gateway into more extreme forms of metal. You will get it all.

The new cd is fn amazing, but im mad i have to buy the vinyl to here the AIC cover.

I seen them on memorial day and they didnt dissapoint and played a tight 55 min set.

During the show they actually announced that they will be doing a headline tour in the US in September and October.

i'm only a casual fan of the band. They're amazing I just don't really listen to metal a lot but my friends do. Heard the new album yesterday and have to say that it's fucking awesome...just like the rest of their material.

I just gave this album a listen and it is fucking sweet! I don't believe that anything for the rest of the year will be able to touch this and Evil Urges. I know there is going to be a lot more albums, but these two are just fucking incredible.

This album is indeed bad ass!
Nice response from everyone on here. Opeth is really one of the best bands around. I wish they were coming to STL on thier tour, the live shows they put on are spectacular. I only wish they would play for 3 hours like PJ, then maybe there would be like 10 songs in the set...

I may have mentioned it was on the vinyl version earlier. I was wrong. To my knowledge, it hasn't been released. Derelict Herds is included on the vinyl -- as well as a CD that include the entire album and this one song.

I love the direction this band is taking their sound - making it more diverse. Their cover songs are solid and true. Much respect to them, young guys bringing us 'old man's rock' (Akerfeldt used that term in the GR video). The earlier albums are def harder, but they have enough of that in their catalog. Me, I really like things a lot from Still Life forward. Been listening to the live one that came out last Fall too! The DVD of that show is being released in September -- cannot wait!

dude you have fuckin great taste in music. minus the bear, opeth and a pearl jam fan? We should have grabbed a beer before you went to philly.

I don't know which is my fav album probably blackwater park, but i love still life a lot too.

Watershed has some great moments i liked how they really tried be diverse in their setlist even though they were supporting their new album. Lots of tracks from different albums.

He introduced Deliverance by saying: This song is a MASTERPIECE. (in his sarcastic sweedish way :) )
It was one of he highlights of the night.

I saw them at the HOB in chicago for an evening with show a couple years back and one of the biggest suprises for me was seeing how cool they all were on stage...no egos...no bullshit..really nice, cool guys playing fucking technical and beautiful music. It's great seeing the setlist..it was almost a 3 hour show but they only played about 13 songs...those sweedes really know how to right some long epic shit.

Yeah, those guys are effing sweet!! I just saw them here in STL and it was incredible. They keep getting better and better every time I see them.
Micheal is a funny ass dude, he had the whole place rolling that night. If he ever stopped playing music he should do stand up.

I saw them last week. Others included were

Still Life – Serenity Painted Death
    Damnation – Hope Leaves
My Arms, Your Hearse – Demon of the Fall
Morningrise – The Night and the Silent Water

they really do try to hit on various releases, very cool. This show coupled with High on Fire and Baroness was a headbangers dream show.

I truly do not think their is a better live tune than Deliverance. I mean really, the last 5 - 6 minutes of that?.

Yep same setlist like most metal bands it does not really vary. they played:

    Heir Apparent
    The Grand Conjuration
    Serenity Painted Death
    Hope Leaves
    Bleak
    The Lotus Eater
The Night And The Silent Water
    Deliverance
    Demon Of The Fall
    The Drapery Falls

Not to mention quite a nice tease of AIC's Man in the box.
