Anyone check these guys out?

101.9 here in NYC/NJ has been playing their song 'Sequestered in Memphis' and I really dig it!

I don't want to be hostile. I don't want to be dismal. But I don't want to rot in an apathetic existance either.

similar. they're just a great classic rock band. though some of their earlier stuff is kinda quirky because the lead singer didn't really, well, sing much. kinda talked and mumbled and ranted. he's more straightforward now. but they always had a knack for a great riff, funny lyrics, and a kick ass chorus.
    and like that... he's gone.

*waves hand* big fan of the band. They are great live too. Craig Finn has that unique vocal sound..either you dig or you don't (much like Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips). I think both of these guys add a great touch and make each band great.

Check out all their cds..they are all very strong and similar to Seq. in Memphis.

Great band - can't go wrong with any of their records but Boys And Girls In America is a good place to start.

    They're great. :D
  • I'm really starting to love this band... The Bruce Springsteen comparisons are thrown around pretty liberally with them, but dammit, they're pretty much spot on. I said it on another thread, but Lord I'm Discouraged off Stay Positive is a masterpiece.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Cool, thanks everyone. I'll definitely pick some of their stuff up......

    You may be right

Dont dig and seen em twice

I think the singer is kind of annoying

Start with "Boys & Girls In America", it's their easiest album to get into, their latest("Stay Positive") is right behind it in terms of accessability(although not as good, IMO). After that look for "Separation Sunday" which is probably my favorite of theirs, but it took me a lot longer to get into than Boys & Girls did.

For sure, I felt the bonus tracks were stronger than most of Stay Positive.
"I'll do whatever the song dictates - if it doesn't need a real lead, then I won't do one. But if it does, then I'll fuckin' go off." - Mike

"Japan is awesome; the fans there knew all the words to all the songs...at least phonetically." - Stone

"I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version." - EV
  • I'm going to see them with the DBT- can't wait!
"I can't hear you, you're trailing off and did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?"

    "No, it was cordless."
  • Stuck Between Stations is quickly becoming one of my favourite songs ever. :D I just wish their one gig over here this year was their own show, not a support gig for the Counting Crows.

Top 3 for me besides PJ and the Boss. New album is great, but check out "Separation Sunday". Perfect album. Shows are a blast..enjoy.

loved the amazon review that said craig finn is more familiar with the bottom of a whiskey glass than he is with the sun :))

  • I think this is the first time I have seen a Hold Steady thread on here. I'm a big fan. The new album is a grower but I really enjoy it now. I love the story-telling aspect of the lyrics and a lot of their songs remind me of what it was like been in my twenties (a time sadly behind me lol)

i didn't catch on til stay positive when they toured with dbt, but since then i've probably listened to more hold steady than anything else. imo, craig is best lyricist of his generation. the recurring characters, the ongoing storyline... i didn't even notice that shit til the 10th listen. then spent the next 100 trying to piece it together. finally felt like i had an understanding, he sneaks a lifter puller location or a clear heart character into the hold steady world, and it's back to the drawing board. it's brilliant. and maddening. and fucking great. september in st paul can't come soon enough.

Rock n roll Means Well tour was so fucking fun.
  • I just saw them for the first time in Asbury Park with the Drive By Truckers. The HS played first then DBT, then they played a few songs together. Great show. Loved DBT. HS was good but I wouldn't buy an album or see them headline.

  • Does anyone know what the bandname means? I couldn't find an interview and I don't think that it is what urbandictionary said.

    hold steady
a sexual position used by young gay males.
"Yo dude,I can't wait to rock the hold steady with Pete on our date."
