Other than Mule Variations (which is an EXCELLENT Album), what other Tom Waits Album would you recommend?

    i really like rain dogs.
    So I bid farewell to the Eastern town I never more will see;
But work I must so I eat this dust and breathe refinery.
    Oh I miss the green and the woods and streams and I don't like cowboy clothes;
But I like being free and that makes me an idiot I suppose.

Small Change is great. Blood Money is also terrific - God's Away on Business is one of my all-time fav songs. And the video for it is just crazy.
  • Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs are my favourites. Real Gone is fantastic as well although it takes a couple listens.

Of all the shows I have ever been to, I can honestly say that Tom Waits in 1999 was far and away the best.

Nighthawks at the Diner is amazing. Go for it. Small change is up there too, but you can't be nighthawks, it is unbelievable.
  • Small Change, Heart Attack & Vine, and Closing Time. Heart of Saturday Night too.

    Bone Machine

this was the first Waits album I got. Definitely a great one. Pretty dark, though.
"What’s Orphans? I don’t know. Orphans is a dead end kid driving a coffin with big tires across the Ohio River wearing welding goggles and a wife beater with a lit firecracker in his ear." - Tom Waits
  • I got mule Variations too. your right, its deffinetly EXCELLENT!

I've only heard about 3 or 4 of Tom Waits albums. Mule Variations, Alice Blood Money, and . . . (Im drawing a blank on the last album.) Mule Variations was the best, but Alice was prolly seccond best.

His latest album "Real Gone" is freakin' amazing.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

I think its impossible to go wrong with a Tom Waits record. Obviously, Rain Dogs is considered his best.

For Me, lately I have not been able to get 'Blood Money' out of my cd player. I think 'Frank's Wild Years' is incredibly underrated. But next, Id go with Heartattack and Vine. But really, you will be happy with anything you buy...if you like Mule Vibrations...it only gets better, IMO.

the only song of his I know---one of my faves on the sndtrack (eddie's long road and face of love come first of course)

    Walk Away
    *********

Dot King was whittled from the bone of Cain
with a little drop of poison in the red, red blood
She need a way to turn around the bend
She said I want to walk away and start over again.

There are things I've done I can't erase
I want to look in the mirror, see another face
I said never would I do it again
I want to walk away, start over again.

    No more rain
    No more roses
On my way, shake my thirst in a cool, cool pond.

There is a (widower/whittler/winner) in every place
There is a heart that's beating in every page
The beginning of it starts at the end
When it's time to walk away and start over again.

Weather is murder at a hundred and three
    William Ray shot Corabell Lee
A yellow dog knows when he has sinned
You want to walk away and start over again.

    No more rain
    No more roses
On my way, shaking my thirst in a cool cool pond.

Cooper told Maui the whole block is gone
They're dying for jewelry, money, and clothes
I always get out of the trouble I'm in
I want to walk away, start over again.

I left my bible by the side of the road
Carve my initials in an old dead tree
I'm going away but I'm going to be back when
It's time to walk away and start over again.
