ok so there seems to be alot of support for this idea and we certainly have enough time between now and xmas '08... Halszka123 has put me in charge of recruiting for this lil project... let me fill y'all in on the details...

were gonna go with the large picture made up of smaller picture idea (ex: http://www.photomosaic.com/rt/examples/lincolnbig.jpg )... since this is a democracy and a gift from all of us we will use this thread to pool ideas for what the main image will be, I was thinking album art or a band portrait or maybe just the words thank you... and the smaller pictures (probably 2" x 2") would be fan shots (pics of you and friends @ shows, wearing PJ shirts, etc) that we all send in... or if you just wanna send the abe lincoln example we can get that poster pretty cheap and save alot of time and effort ;)

basically what i need from everyone is TONS of pictures of you and other fans (@ shows, with a member(s) of the band, playing a pj song, thinking of pj, making pj related art, listening to pj, etc etc etc)... crop your pictures to be a perfect square of any reasonable file size (with the program we are now gonna use it doesnt really matter) and send them to the gmail account ive set up solely for this project: xmaspresenttense@gmail.com

*Try to include several pictures with differing color schemes and amounts of lights and darks because the program will automatically assign pictures to where they fit in the final piece and i dont want anyone to get left out!

Is there a sincere interest in helping with this project??... its certainly too monumentous to carry out with only a handful of people... PJ and 10C deserve our thanks and this will be something they can hopefully frame in their studio and cherish for years

heres the original thread for those that missed it: http://forums.pearljam.com/showthread.php?t=266428

  • ok ill post the first image idea to consider:

    http://www.paulaltobelli.com/uploaded_images/pearl_jam_new_album-747980.jpg

and we can replace the words "pearl jam" with "thank you" in the same font... its got a good variety of tones and is a pretty simple shape... nice and recent... what do people think?

    http://seanbriceart.com/
  • so if we do that image itd be a perfect square... we can make it 6' x 6'... divided into 1' squares for people to work on... all made up of 2" square pictures... that would be 1296 individual photos... WOAH... thats alot... and we cant really make the small photos much bigger or it wont create a very smooth image... and we need the whole piece to be pretty large to create a wow factor... do people think wed get enough photos from people to do this? think of it this way, if you volunteer you only have 36 pictures to deal with... and thats not nearly as overwhelming

  • obviously we could also go with:

    http://www.ilbaluardo.com/Cover/Audio/P%20-%20Q%20-%20R/PEARL%20JAM%20-%20Ten%20-%20Front.jpg

start at the beginning :D ... anything works well cause theres the same amount of letters in "pearl jam" and "thank you"... maybe im thinking too "inside the box" with the album art thing tho... lets get suggestions!

no code would also be an easy solution since thats already somewhat of a photomosaic theme

  • Of course... sounds like a great idea. :)

When I take a picture I'll send it over..

a picture of fans at pj events or something pj related , all grouped together to make a cool pj logo of some sorts...

Im not sure what the original idea whats exactly so i may be way off here.

Im a lil confused though, does the project need help in the sense of just resizing pictures? Or more in depth?

the help is needed more with getting the images organized in a way that creates a bigger picture (see the example in my first post of civil war pics that make up lincoln's face)

the pics should already be sized when they are emailed... all we need is 36 volunteers that will take from a collection of images pooled amongst us fans to make 1/36 of the final piece... does that make more sense? im just dividing the work to make it easier...

btw... i just set up the email for people to SEND THEIR PHOTOS TO:

    xmaspresenttense@gmail.com :D

once we have received enough pics on there ill get them all up onto a joint photobucket account for the volunteers to draw from as they work

  • ok i found more examples:

    http://www.photomosaic.com/samples/large/DarthVader.jpg
(trying to do it in color would be great but also more challenging)

    http://www.photomosaic.com/samples/large/TheBeatles.jpg

this should help explain a lil better if i wasnt clear before... our mini pictures will of course be a lil larger so PJ can distinguish fan faces if they so choose... naturally my face will be given a very prominent place to reward all my hard work :D

  • one last thing... if the mods or someone associated with the band see this thread... is there anyway to make sure this gets to the band if we actually complete this project? i hate to see it go to waste and im sure the response from fans would be much larger if they knew for sure it would get to the boys... give me confirmation if you can!

why don't we make a huge picture mosaic with pictures of each member of the message pit and send that to the band? this is a good idea too.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.
  • I like these mosaic photos!
Reminds me a lot of No Code, too :)
    And it's a great idea. :)

well yah thats essentially the idea... doesnt just have to be a picture of you alone tho... could be you and friends drinking before a show or at the show or any number of things... it should be more about their fanbase as a whole versus just those that use this message board... if people would prefer just portraits of all the pit users tho well leave the option open for discussion... might be nice to put those red mosquito and BRY bastards in their place ;)

thanks so much! the one of you n mike should work great! i dont think i was clear before when i said "fan shots" i mean pics of you the fans (w/ or w/o a member of the band)... just to clear things up... i like your pics of the guys tho too!

and i cant stress enough, PLEASE crop the pictures to 2" x 2" or atleast a square of some size before sending to make less work for whoever compiles them

    THANKS AGAIN

  • Album art would be cool and all, but I think over the passed 15 or so years, one album doesn't explain enough. Something that the whole band is into, or at least feels strongly about (it's for them, not us). We know the ocean is a big part of a lot of PJ music. We know Eddie surfs (maybe others too?). It's a vital part of the environment etc..

A wave with THANK YOU over it, or a beach at sunset.. something.. idk.. just trying to think of something with a lot of colors (blue-green water, blue sky, red sun maybe, yellow beach). I say a lot of colors because of the pictures that people would be sending in, not all may fit one small color scheme. Even though it can be tinted and whatnot to fit.

    Just brain storming here :D

Also another example of the picture mosaic would be this: http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/PD--12042500/SP--A/IGID--1430500/Bob_Marley_Mosiac.htm?sOrig=CAT&sOrigID=2223&ui=33082CD64717430BB1EF9A5EAD87A949

It was always one of my favorite posters and one of the first times I've seen this style of art.

great idea! a wave would be cool... maybe an oriental style one? like the backdrop they used @ the vic and lolla or on the EMEK poster?

and unrelated ?... is there a program out there that would automatically transfer a collection of photographs into an image? i would think there might be... that would make this project real easy!

Just came across something that might be of help.

    A tutorial:
    http://www.engadget.com/2004/10/19/how-to-make-your-own-photo-mosaics/

    Program used in the tutorial:
    http://www.andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/

You can actually have that program search google.com for pictures to use.. interesting.

The more pictures, the higher overall quality too. Of course than it gets to be really big, but check the detail out in this:
    http://www.andreaplanet.com/mosaic/starrynight/

Seems pretty damn easy actually. Coming up with the pictures to use, and the larger theme is the hard part I guess.

EDIT: Came across this wave.. I've never seen it before, I guess this is what EMEK parodied. They're pretty damn similar.

  • If an album is chosen, it should be one that Matt was involved with (as opposed to the Ten cover). I think the Avacado one would be cool... especially because a lot of the pictures could come from the Avacado tour.

Thanks for all that! very useful! I guess its up for everyone to decide then... wave design or album art? and i agree that the album should be something matt was a part of now that i think about it... lets start gathering some pictures!

  • I like the Avocado album cover. It seems to be much more "doable" than a more complicated design, and it is equally relevant to all band members (whereas a wave design would seem to be more Eddie-centric).

I never saw (or never read) the original idea...just to be clear, are we just being asked to send in a photo of ourselves? Any photo? Or is the photo supposed to say "thank you" in some way?

i didnt really specify... it can be anything... ill post some examples if you wanna see what ive compiled so far from old threads... and as far as the difficulty of the design goes, i dont think itll mater now that weve discovered that program that automatically organizes the pics

ok... ran into a problem as i was trying out that andreamosaic program for PC... it wont let you save or copy your mosaic once it finishes... so umm thats out... maybe the program for macs works better... if a mac user can confirm you can save with that one then i can do it on a mac at school when i get back... were gonna need a ton of very different photos too for something like that to work...
