Noel Redding or Billy Cox, as Jimi's bassist?

Billy Cox, all the way, for me.

Noel Redding:

Billy Cox:

Edit: I know the first link is of bad visual quality, but I'm sure most Jimi fans have seen/heard the Lulu show and Berkeley clips anyway. I'm not asking people to compare and contrast the two on the basis of those examples, per se, but on their opinions in general.

I like that. It's such a tough call.

  • If you listen to the music that Jimi was recording after the Experience disbanded (and AFTER Woodstock), there was such chemistry and cohesiveness in artistic vision. It was a chemistry that he and Noel never came close to achieving....especially since Noel had aspirations of his own that essentially were held back by the Experience.

Speaking of, the record Noel cut on lead vox with Jimi on lead is actually a great listen and a nice companion to the other Experience albums...available on the official JHE website.

  • Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell were born to back Jimi. The post-Band of Gypsies era was by far my favorite Hendrix period.

I totally agree. I do like Noel's playing. He brought kind a jazz sensibility to the music I liked. I always loved the bass line on Third Stone From the Sun. Billy definitely had a funkier groove, though.

Billy Cox. I just like Jimi post Experience more.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.
  • Mitch all the way. Don't get me wrong, Buddy's a damn good drummer and can lay down a funky beat, but Mitch just brought a higher level of intensity to the music, and I think he did more interesting things on the live extended jams. I like the Elvin Jones influence in Mitch's playing.

Billy Cox no question, I heard that jimi recorded many of the bass parts on the records so maybe that brings redding into question a little, though no doubt hendrix was probably a master bass player as well.
The Band of Gypsys live album is amazing, and i liked The Cry Of Love record as well.....real groovey basslines.

saw a documantary once and I felt Redding was disrespectful towards hendrix in that he told certain tales that could have been left unsaid.

Yeah, you must mean that documentary "The Man They Made God". I don't believe a lot of the stories Noel told.
