i just did some further thinking, and other than pj albums, i'd have to say that the best opener is:

    rusty cage off soundgarden's badmotorfinger.

    final answer.
  • Pretty much any song that begins a Beatles album.
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
    Taxman (Revolver)
Hard Day's Night (Hard Day's Night)
    Help! (Help!)
    Come Together (Abbey Road)
Back in the USSR (The White Album)
Two Of Us (Let It Be)
    Drive My Car (Rubber Soul)
    and so on...

really you guys think it's better than zeppelin?

i love zeppelin and all, but the opening lick to rusty cage rules all.

and if i went with zeppelin, it'd be good times, bad times.

"Silence Kit" by Pavement is probably the only correct answer

"Prayer To God" by Shellac might be up there too, actually

and My Bloody Valentine's "Only Shallow"

So those are my 3 favourite openers. I prefer them over anything the Beatles/Led Zep/Pink Floyd/any other of the usual suspects did
    printf("shiver in eternal darkness\n");

i just realized that in the flesh? would be my pick for second place.

Well as far as Zeppelin goes, I don't think it gets much better than "Good Times, Bad Times" from Led Zeppelin I.

What else? Hmmm . . . Green Day, "Burnout" form Dookie.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit . . .
    Sleep on horseback
Far moon in a continuing dream
    Steam of roasting tea

    it's a personal thing isn't it.
it's just that from the opening note whole lotta love just gets me in the mood. it pulls me into II and by heartbreaker i'm smiling like an idiot.

I don't know everyone can be talking about Led Zeppelin, and yet no one mentions Immigrant Song or Achilles' Last Stand. Shame on everyone.

if we're talking about Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand from Presence deserves a mention

Rotten Apple by AIC, Last Exit by PJ are others

    Put the freaks up front.
This is the opening song for dEUS's The ideal crash.
Really great song and a good opener.
