1. Guns N' Roses opening for The Cult in Calgary- 1987 I think. Appetite For Destruction had barely just been released and nobody knew who the hell they were at the time. I remember we got there late and only caught the last couple songs of their set.
2. Wilco opening for The Tragically Hip in 1997.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
I saw At The Drive In open for Rage Against the Machine in 1999, They were absolutely awful, but the did kind of hit it big with their last album before they broke up.

I would think Rage and ATDI would be a very cool show to see!

the only thing that's coming to mind right now is tesla opening for david lee roth back in '87. if i remember correctly, mechanical resonance had just come out and the only song they had on the radio was modern day cowboy.
ok, just checked wiki and it says mechanical resonance was released on dec 8, 1986. makes sense, because it was january of '87 when i saw the show.
I saw Cheryl Crow open for John Hiatt at the Stone Pony (in Jersey) and there were only about 10 people in the place and she was great. Just her and a piano.
Also saw Soundgarden and Blind Melon open for Neil Young.
I know there have got to be others, but my 4 kids have turned my brain (and memory) to mush.
Gonna rise up....burning black holes in dark memories. Gonna rise up....turning mistakes into gold.

It was a very good show to see, I was just not into ATDI at the time, all I remember is wishing their set would end. Looking back I wish I had of known what I was seeing, they had amazing energy, but a lot of screaming to go along with it, that much I will never forget.
