Excessive rock stars?

You never hear about bands who live the so called "rock star" life, ala Led Zep or Motley Crue, or bands like that. Bands that had groupies, took ridiculous amounts of drugs, had god complexes, and basically did whatever the hell they wanted to.

Are groupies, drugs and the rock star life a thing of the past?

I dont think the bands of the moment like The shins, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, etc... are indulging.

Perhaps it's a matter of personality, or morals...another point to take into consideration is that Zeppelin, The Stones, Aerosmith, Crue, etc...were treated like Gods at their time...and there wasn't nearly as much competition/variety as there is today...at least not as mainstream.

Today hip hop, pop, country, indie, metal and the many variations of rock are the main preference of the public...with so much mainstream musical choice out there, I think it makes it more difficult for fans, women, whatever have you to be as obsessive as it used to be.

It could also be the fact that bands that are coming out today are no where near the iconic status that these other bands that you mention were at...so far in their careers not too many bands out there have made their impact and impressed enough people to sleep with them and encourage large amounts of drug use.

These are my thoughts on your subject :)

    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL

    9/03/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 1

Well....just my honest opinion.....none of the bands you mention have the balls that Zep and the Crue had.

On another note, I read an article somewere (forget where) that talked about how the role of the record labels has changed things. In the old days, the label used to fork out the cash for the drugs and usher in the girls into the recording studio and out on the road. Now the record labels don't fork out the cash anymore as they are dying out.

Many bands still do it. Maybe not in the indie scene but definitely metal bands and alternative rock bands. And we all know the deal with rappers.

  • It's not shocking anymore, so we don't hear about it. Really, if someone told you... say... Kings of Leon, were fucked up on drugs and snorting coke off groupies' ass cheeks, would it surprise you? No - it was newsworthy in the 70's and 80's, when bands were pushing the limits of excess and being taken to court for playing the Devil's music. Now, it's just accepted as part of the job. I'd say people are more shocked when there's a band that doesn't get fucked up most nights.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

I think it still goes on but it's not publicized because it's been done to death and it isn't a big deal anymore. After the late 80's "metal" scene, the "sex, drugs, and rock n roll" mantra had become a total cliche. I'm sure most bands today are having sex and doing drugs. They're expected to. It's just understood they're doing it

That being said, I doubt anyone is fucking girls with sharks nowadays

  • Scott Weiland is surprising still alive. His excessive drug use is despicable and I truly don't see how anyone could support him. He has had numerous chances to better himself but he chooses not too. I think that him doing drugs makes him think he is cool and a rock star.

I'm glad that the 'new' generation of great musical acts don't use drugs to make them look like a "rock star."

I'm not that big a fan of Scott Weiland and I am surprised he is still alive too but I don't think he got hooked on drugs to be cool and look like a rock star. I think he got hooked on drugs because like so many now, it is made readily available to them and they try it once then maybe have just a little bit more and then before you know it they are totally hooked. The smart ones finally realize they have a problem and get help and will continue to get help when they fall, others they just stay in denial.

Don't think the 'new' generation of great musical acts don't do drugs. I'm sure some do. Drug abuse affects everyone these days. I think everyone knows someone who has a problem.

you bet. it's a damn shame. in the old days, jimmy page can pretty much marry a 14 year old girl, now it puts r kelly on trial for years and wrecks his career. now if you tried to play with fish or a shark, you'd have peta boycotting all your shows and whatnot. this whole pc decency thing has sucked all the fun out of life.

i found my legal calling... helping rock stars continue to behave disgustingly without being hauled into court for it! and maybe occasionally taking a few of the leftovers and castaways ;)

Led zepp had a big influence over most of 80's glam metal bands in terms of rockstar lifestyle: flamboyant clothes, get tons of chicks, their own private jet.

You got Ronnie Wood going off with that young Russian teenager. But the man is 60+. It's pathetic.
