I dont think they will be on anyones top 100 artists of the last 100 years list. and thats a shame.

I just listened to Bringing down the horse again and its a hell of a record. One of those cd's you can return to years later and still be amazed.

I also have Breach, and that was decent as well.

I think its tough to imagine Jakobs position. His father isnt just a musician. He is arguably the most important songwriter of the last half of the 20th century. His father is considered a poet.

So to have to follow up that, is tough.

But the Wallflowers and Jakob are talented non the less. Are their other records worth checking out?

  • i love all their records. breach is probably my favorite, but like you said, bringing down the horse is also a classic. check out rebel, sweetheart if you wanna hear the stuff they've been doing recently. it was better than red letter days, altho i'm not sure it's quite as good as breach or BDTH. the s/t album is fun, an early look at how the wallflowers started out... much more of a tom petty kinda sound. i like it a lot. i'd rate the albums like this:

    breach
    BTDH
    rebel, sweetheart
    s/t
    red letter days

Jakob may be the frontman, but the real backbone of the band is Rami Jaffee, the keyboard player!
  • I read the liner notes for breach and bringing down the horse and they refer to michael ward as a guitarist.

is that m.ward, who is a musician himself, but also a friend of bright eyes?

Its a different fella....Michael Ward was in a band called School of Fish in the late 80s/90s, then joined the Wallflowers in 1997. He then left the band several years later, and is now playing in Ben Harpers band.

    Other former wallflowers members:

Peter Yanowitz left them to play with Natalie Merchant (his then girl-friend), and is now in "Morningwood"

Mario Callarie, (the drummer who replaced Yanowitz) - he left and is now in "Ozomatli"

I've owned Bringing Down the Horse since the days when it was a radio hit, but I never truly appreciated the album until recently. I pulled it out of the closet about a year ago and was amazed to discover how good it is. I was probably too young to appreciate the album as a whole back in the 90's.

I'll have to add Breach to my wishlist - I've been thinking about buying another Wallflowers album, but I had no idea where to start.

I don't have any Wallflowers, but bought the Jakob because he was SUPPOSED to play before the Black Crowes in Ottawa.

    The album's brilliant.

I'm listening to Bringing Down The Horse for the first time in probably 8 years or more and I must say it's quite good. The songs stand out and don't seem dated. I might have to check out their other stuff now as well as Jakob's new album.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Bringing Down the Horse was my first real album ever... I got it on tape for my birthday when I was maybe 8 or 9. I have to download it or buy it and listen to it again, come to think of it.

I was always a fan even during the unpopular albums. I think they were underrated. Does anyone have Jakob Dylan's solo album?
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
