Of the bands you list, mid era Sepultura were as good as metal gets at the time - check out Choas AD and Roots - both stunning albums from a non metalhead's perspective. Im sure there are some metal afficionados who thought these two were too accessible, but I thought they were stunning. Refuse/Recist still gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing.
Converge and opeth seem to get a good press but dont know them too well. Know nothing about Earth other than I think the singer was a mate of Cobain - but could be getting my bands mixed up.
Sepultura - id only recommend them up to when Max left...Beneath the Remains, Arise and Chaos AD especially are what you should check out.
If you want to check out some heavy music sure they are.
Opeth- blackwater park is my favorite by them
Sepultura- Chaos AD is considered their defining album by many.
Sepultura grooves a little more then Opeth and sepultura's lyrics to me a a little easier to understand.
I don't know much about converge or earth.
I will use this as an opportunity to whore out one of my favorite bands right now if you want to check out another good heavy album Mastodon's blood mountain came out this year and it is fucking bad ass.
