Any Rage fans here?

I remember how powerful and amazing Tom Morello's guitar work sounded when I first heard them.

I remember Zack De La Rocha's powerful rhymes.

They are the reason I know about Mumia, Leonard Peltier, the Zapatistas and such

I read some of the books they recommended.

I think they are one of the most radical musician's ever, their lyrics expressed support of revolutionary violence, and those who are oppressed to rise up any way they can. The lyrics to Calm like a bomb at the end seem to express support for murder of capitalists in order to start the revolution. Pretty heavy stuff.

tom morello is insane! but in a good way. i never got a chance to see rage but i saw audioslave, front row of the pit on toms side (or stones side as we like to call it ;) ) and watching him play was UNbelievable! he is such an amazing guitar player, i dont know how to play the guitar but he seems very creative and innovative (i could just be talking out my ass right now but imo....)
chris cornell being as sexy as he is made the whole experience THAT much better too :)

i agree in rage and in Audioslave tom is amazing.

I love music that takes from the past, but creates something new, that is unlike anything we have ever seen.

Tom Morello seems to believe in this idea too.

Whatever you think of rage or audioslave their is no question tom morello is a great guitarist, who is willing to create sounds on the guitar unlike those being heard now on the radio.

As an aspiring guitarist, his motto about practicing is making me question school and stuff. He said at Harvard, he would practice 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, even if he had an exam the next day.

    Pretty amazing.

John Frusciante is the only person i have heard who topped this kind of work ethic, during the drug period of his life he said he practiced 10-12 hours a day.

I was a pretty big fan of Rage around the time when Evil Empire came out. I still listen to them occasionally, but not as much as I used to. Morello might be the 90s version of Hendrix. Not so much for the style, but as for being incredibly skilled and innovative. I think I got a little turned off by all of the politics of that band...I have no problem with someone using that position to spread a message, but with them I think it became a little excessive.

thats what I am trying to figure out. In the bands eyes, the albums werent successful and they werent successful musicians IF they didnt turn some people on to some of the politics. Its interesting you were turned off by it.

I loved how angry it was. It needed to be.

I personally dont think it was excessive at all, these were all actual communist/socialists who believed revolution was a good thing. These arent people who think that voting will change anything.

I agree Tom is the 90's hendrix.

I think the reason why they broke up was zack and tom maybe were more into the politics than the music, and tim and brad were more into the music.

Overall I think they were successful, they changed my life. I am now an activist.

They were definitely successful. They did influence a lot of people with both music and politics. I have a DVD of them that has their videos (uncensored) and a couple of live performances. At one of the shows, the audience was headbanging and moshing in perfect rhythm with the band and reminded of how some of the Nirvana shows circa Nevermind looked. It's a pretty good video if you like Rage.

And I thought they broke up because Zack wanted to start his solo hip-hop career? Not sure about that though.

i think they influenced a lot of younger people to go out and do some research about important issues and to fight against corruption. probably the best band, and most successful at doing so.

i was fortunate enough to see them once on the battle of los angeles tour and they had several stations set up at the venue for local charities, local political issues, and other issues the band were interested in at the time.

i have seen interviews with tim where he says that rage enlightened him as well...having met tom especially. i believe tom is a harvard grad, or attended harvard for a period of time...and, along with zack helped the others get into political and social issues...conveying the message through music.

still listen to a lot of rage, and having spent a lot of time researching leonard peltier's case, i know that he is truly grateful to them for putting his cause out in the mainstream and letting people know what was happening with him and especially the lakota people.

    RAGE!

i saw rage at nassau coliseum a few years back (just after battle of los angeles came out) and it is the most memorable concert i have ever been too...i remember the lights went out and i huge banner that looked like the cover of BOL dropped except it said "battle of new york"...the crowd went nuts and it was absolute mayhem from there...morello and zach tore it up...i was in the pit and ended up leaving with a bloody lip and ripped t-shirt...i remember not sleeping all night from the adrenaline

my brother couldn't make it due a last minute thing and he still kicks himself that he missed it...he told me he would catch them next time around (little did he know that would never happen)...haha oh well

everytime i get the itch to hear them i pop in the mexico city DVD ...a must have for any rage fan
  • yeah, it was the "battle of toronto" when i saw them there.

before the lights went down i would estimate about 2,000 people stormed the floor and security was helpless...before the encore, about 1,500 more did the same...when they played bulls on parade the floor looked like an ocean of people! it was nuts!!!

definitely one of the best shows i have ever seen!

THEY DO NOT ADVOCATE VIOLENCE OR THE MUDER OF ANYONE!

you might want to pop those records in again and check the lyrics

saw them live with wu-tang...one word...INSANE!

and Tom Morello is my second favorite guitar player, slightly behind McCready

RAGE and wu-tang! wow! i saw them with gangstarr...not too bad, but wu-tang would have been awesome. :)

yeah, i agree, a lot of the lyrics in some songs would be more appropriately described as metaphorical...not truly advocating violence and those extremes. just meant to get people angry enough to get out and do something about injustice and things they see as being wrong. not meant to be taken literally.
