What are some good records that deal with the feelings expressed above. I am especially looking for music dealing with feelings of longing.

To start off, an example being Nick Drake's classic Pink Moon which expresses all those feelings. Very powerful record

Beck's Sea Change. Beautifully agonizing from start to finish.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

The man ones for me would be:

Dirt by Alice in chains. My favourite record of all time. Bleak is the only word for it.

The Downward Spiral by Nine inch nails. Just so depressing and claustrophobic.

    Closer by Joy Division

The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers. Listen to 4st 7lb. If you don't feel some sort of emotion then you are dead.

Pink Floyd's The Wall and/or (to a lesser extent) Dark Side of the Moon.
    NIN- Downward Spiral

    Great grunge-like sound. Very bleak.

They say have your own fun...

    Need vinyl, doggs.
  • It's not exactly rock, but Chris Isaaks' Forever Blue is pretty much non-stop heartbreak. Some of the songs are actually a bit upbeat, but the tone of the album is pretty bleak.

gotta agree with Beck's Sea Change

  • Tool - Lateralus

Radiohead - Kid A, Hail To The Theif

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Most of it, but especially "Murder Ballads" I think.

Smashing Pumpkins - Adore (sweet relief for the soul), and the rest of their work to a lesser extent.

The Cure - Disintegration (***probably the most suited album for depression ever made***)

    Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning

Neil Young - After The Goldrush

Alice in Chains - Dirt, Unplugged, Jar Of Flies

Modest Mouse - At least half of every album they've made, I suggest the middle of "Moon and Antartica" and "Lonesome Crowded West"

Beck - Sea Change (****** GORGEOUS, enlightening record******)

PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?

    NIN in general

Jeff Buckley - Grace (so so so so so beautiful)
