How many copies (illegal and legal) do popular musicians sell?

Assuming we all agree that music is fragmented today, and that it would be hard for another Nirvana to occur because of that, how many copies legal and illegal, do top bands sell nowadays?
I remember when Backstreet Boys and Nsync were selling 1 million in one week, that was back in 1999. Music has only become more important to people. And assuming you cant rely on soundscan anymore, that means the 100,000-200,000 copies of legal cd;s sold most weeks by the top selling bands are unreliable.
So how many copies do the charttoppers really sell? They certainly sell more than 100-200,000 right?
