I love the weirdo bands!

So we drove to Baltimore on Saturday night to see Acid Mothers Temple, a band that my neighbor loves and was raving about as his favorite live band. I'd heard of them, but never really heard a lot of their stuff.

HOLY MACKEREL!!!!!!!

What a hell of a live show full of weirdness and noise.

These guys are from Japan and play in small venues and absolutely blow you away with music that's not quite from this planet.
Unless you've seen any other typical psychedelic/ Japanese throat singing through effects/ loud marshall stack guitar playing/ improvisational/ soft vibey ballad playing/ long grey haired dudes who hardly speak any English but make you laugh, and they laugh while they're making this music from outer space.

They played at the Ottoman the other night, and are at Johnny Brenda's tonight in Philadelphia, otherwise, they're traveling all around.

We went to eat before the show, and there was a Korean barbeque place nearby, went in, and ended up sitting at the same table with the band. Haha,,, smile, say Hi, they say Hi, then one word sentences, but we were all laughing the whole time. Great guys.

5 minutes of weirdness:

Here's 20 minutes of what to expect, but they're different every time so you never know what to expect.

The opening band, Danava was incredible, too! Not my cup of tea music wise, but amazing tight rock band that sounded a bit like if you sped up a Black Sabbath record.
One of the great drummers I've seen, too. I was tired just watching him!

Cool to see another AMT fan here (even if the post is unanswered and seven plus years old, LOL).

I ran into my buddy Andy from the neo-psychedilia/atmospheric trio, Carlton Melton today. Andy told me the best show on their recent European tour with a show they did with Acid Mother's Temple. Would loved to have seen that! AMT has an amazing, deep catalog. Not for everyone, but well worth checking out if you like good stuff that's out of the ordinary. And it goes without saying, the same is true for Carlton Melton. Check out there LP "Photos of Photos" and the recent "Out to Sea".

I’ll definitely leave a review then Brian. I’ve only listened to them a handful of times, but they’re pretty out there from what I’ve heard. Always up for checking out some new music. 👍🏻

Never got to my review, here goes...

The venue’s atmosphere was that of a tiki bungalo beach hut in downtown Miami. It was the perfect place to see this band. Felt like we were in Vietnam or something. Soldiers having a little fun on an off night.

The lighting was great for all 3 bands, and was a big part of the overall presentation. Heavy on the psychedelic peacock visuals, but nothing like those pesky, menacing, avion visions you can get on shrooms from time to time. Was kind of beat from a PJ/Chili Peppers tribute concert the previous night, so I just sat at the bar on the right side and took it all in.

The opening band, Jaialai, was a local band that were all beachy and chill. Wished their set was longer, I could have listened to that stuff all night. Then Yamantaka//Sonic Titan, an experimental Canadian band came on and brought the crazy. They were two female lead singers with nice harmonies, a guy playing guitar with heavy distortion, a drummer, and a guy prancing around on stage the whole time banging on various percussion instruments. It was pretty good for what it was.

Acid Mother’s Temple came on last and took it to another level. They are 5 guys from Japan that don’t speak English. Maybe a couple words here and there. They started out with a two minute jam to showcase their superior technical virtuosity, kind of like RHCP but thrashier and frantic. Then they mellowed out with 20 minutes of deep, droning, meditative music. Brought you back to earth with a quick punk style song. Then got blissful and melodic with “Pink Lady Lemonade”. This I believe is when they’re at their best. They went into something else that I forget, but brought it back into “Pink Lady” which was great.

The dreamy “Cometary Orbital Drive” capped off the evening. Overall there was some nice interplay between the guitarist and bass. The drummer was definitely a highlight, he was swift and got everybody going at the right times. The vocals were minimal, and there was rhythmic chanting in the background in spots. They were only on stage for a little over an hour, but that was more than enough cause it was a long night. Definitely a band worth checking out, probably not for everybody. A little different than The Eagles. Arigato Acid Mother.
