It's definitely a solid line-up and I'll probably be going, but I don't know if the line-up trumps all the festivals you mentioned. I guess it's just a matter of taste though.

Edit: I just noticed you are from New Orleans. My wife and I are going there for our anniversary in a couple of weeks. We've been there for Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest before, but this is our first time to just take in the true sights and sounds of the city. Any suggestions of places we should visit while there?

Yes. I mean aside from the standard French Quarter Tour (Frenchmen, Decatur, Canal, Burbon St.) There are a fucking bunch of awesome music venues you have to check out. Try the Dragon's Den, Tipitina's, Hownlin Wolf, DBA, and Snug Harbor.

My wife and I are in! Just found out this week that my brother-in-law is going to hire us as 'Promotions Directors' for the weekend and hook us up with all kinds of perks.

My sister phoned me with the lineup on Tuesday, but she didn't know that WILCO is going to be there, too. This is very exciting and I am looking very forward to October now.

This is going to be a fantastic weekend! See some of you there.

This is a three-day festival on Oct 26-28, as opposed to the Sat/Sun of years past. The myspace bulletin reads as such:
Voodoo Returns to City Park with a lineup headlined by Rage Against The Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, and Wilco.

    Lineup Includes
-Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals
    -Sinead O'Connor
    -Dr. John
    -Tiesto
    -Kings of Leon

    and many many more

Is it likely that Rage, Smashing Pumpkins, and Wilco are the three feature artists--one for each day of the festival? If so, I would expect Rage to close on Sunday unopposed.

Really hoping Wilco gets to play the final set one of those other nights.

  • Just booked my flight and got my ticket. $115 is a great price for all these acts. Can't wait to experience NOLA!
  • Nice. If anyone going to this needs any info or help with anything. Just PM me. I know my way around this city quite well.
  • Also, from what I'm gathering, the line-up will go: Rage on Friday, Pumpkins on Saturday, and Wilco on Sunday.

I'm basing this only because I know Rage are playing at Vegoose that same weekend.

    It's 12 weeks to Voodoo.

Man, I don't know if I can wait that long. This lineup is too good to be true!

Suggestions on where to stay, Daytime? The wife and I are wondering whether there's a good bed & breakfast nearby...

There are a few. City Park, where the VooDoo is located, is near Mid-City which is a nice area. There are some very nice ones in the Garden District and Uptown which aren't very far from Tulane where there is a bar called the Boot that I'm fairly certain has shuttles to and from voodoo every 30 minutes. But really try to stay in Mid-City, Uptown, or Downtown. Some areas do tend to get a little shady.

I Know that every region deserves a good festival, but damn, there are just too many.......as late as 5 years ago, there was just Coachella, Bonnaroo and VooDoo.

Now they have added Lolla, Virgin, Download, Vegoose, and some of the same bands seem to play all of them.....Coachella is the only one that ever pulls any rabbits out of the hat by getting bands to reform, or getting bands that rarely play live to do so.

You have a good point (especially about Coachella), but the cities hosting these festivals deserve a showcase, too. Grant Park in Chicago, City Park in New Orleans, the Bonnaroo farm, Las Vegas, Austin, etc. all have a good reason to want to bring these artists to a venue near you. And if people weren't traveling/attending these festivals, the producers wouldn't be scrambling to throw up a huge lineup and book all the necessary amenities. The money is there to be made.

    I'm all for it.

I agree its a good showcase for the cities, but if there are just too many of them, people may stop traveling.

I am glad the VooDoo still has a lot of Zydeco/Cajun acts.

Seems like the other formerly "specialized" festivals have opted to book more mainstream acts in order to increase their visibilty.
  • Yeah, VooDoo is cool because it books big national acts, but also integrates the local music of New Orleans seamlessly into the fest. None of the other big fests really do that.

I've never seen Dr. John before. Can't wait for THAT performance!

Kudos to Voodoo for keeping it star-studded, yet committed to local music at the same time.
