You know, I love Interpol, but this song sounds like every other song they've done.

They need to try new things.

Correction: Every song sounds like every song they've ever done that, in turn, sound like every song Joy Division ever did.

I like these guys but can't understand why they get a free pass when everyone slags the Creeds and Nickelbacks of the world for being derivative.

you make a good point. the loathing for jet in the other thread somehow doesn't extend to interpol...

I think you get a free pass when you're from the right scene in Brooklyn...

Because Nickelback and Creed both make safe radio friendly pop music.....nothing interesting at all. I definitely think Interpol sound like Joy Division but I do feel that Interpol have alittle bit more depth to their music with the organ and such, besides for the synths in a few of the Joy Division songs....they were fairly simple songs. All this talk has put me in the mood to listen to Transmission.

im normally on board with you, but that's bullshit. interpol plays an organ so they're thus cool and acceptable? cmon!

that it's bullshit to say interpol gets a free pass on being derivative just becos they play organ and you like their influences better. if being derivative is bad, it's bad. if there's nothing wrong with it, you can't ridicule jet, buckcherry, nickelback, or creed for being derivative and then say it's ok when interpol does it.

I said the organ part comparing them to Joy Division. But anyways, Nickelback and Creed are just boring, unoriginal, and as corporate as rock can get, they have nothing edgy or hip about them at all.

which is a subjective judgment call. i can't stand nickelback or creed. but it's got nothing to do with whether or not they are original and everything to do with them sucking ;)

Interpol rocks. They've put out 2 very good records, at the least (TOTBL is classic). My knock against them is their lack of material, mainly quality b-sides. Specialist is cool, Song Seven is ok. Where's the rest? Screw re-mixes. I'm looking forward to the new release, and am checking my expectations at the door. It it sucks, oh well, I'll still go see em live. I wasn't impressed with the new Kings of Leon at first, but am loving it now. I can see this happening again. I hope so.

Great thing about Interpol is that they still havent made a bad song, if you like one song on the album then you can easily listen to both albums straight through. I am sure many wont agree but I think everything they have made is above average - brilliant.

i don't know. i LOVE turn on the bright lights. but i thought antics was pretty boring. i don't even know that i've listened to it straight through more than once.

i don't think coldplay's worse for sounding the same every record. i think it's a completely different reason. parachutes is brilliant in its simplicity and its quiet atsmosphere. rush of blood... was a pretty genius pop record, that did not have the quiet atmosphere or personal quality that parachutes had. x&y moved even further; it's a cold, soulless, impersonal record with lush layers of keyboards that sound ludicrous, especially when compared to something as stripped-down as parachutes was. coldplay suffers from self-glorification and critical dick-sucking. interpol just doesn't change. i think that's a big difference.

hahaha. x&y was terrible, IMO. they don't change? i'm pretty sure 'evil' and 'not even jail' don't sound like anything from totbl. neither does 'take you on a cruise', or 'narc'. interpol purposely creates a similar atmosphere with their songs, but there is a VERY OBVIOUS change in antics.

i actually just sold antics for that reason. i felt like i didnt need it if i had turn on the bright lights.

i dunno... i was listening to rush of blood and wondered why i would ever need that cd if i had rush of blood... which was almost identical only with better songs. i feel the same about antics vs. turn on the bright lights.
