Love and Theft was fantastic if you don't have that one yet.

oh yes they are good. Love and Theft and Time Out of Mind rank up there with the best of them.
  • i can never say which is my favorite dylan, but i always say if i had to pick two, oh mercy would be one of them...time out of mind is awesome too for the recent ones, and the acoustic pair...

I've started to listen to him since I saw that PBS special on him. I never particularly noticed him before, but I saw why people spoke so highly of him and now I've got all this music to listen to! :)

  • "Time Out Of Mind" was released in 1997 and won album of the year at the grammy's. So you know that's a great album (especially the odd numbered songs) and then his most recent is 2001s "Love And Theft." and I will argue this until the day I die, that "Love And Theft" is one of his top three greatest albums (along with "another side of bob dylan" and "blood on the tracks" (I mean the original album that was supposed to be released)

These are the essential Dylan albums you need to have:

    The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
    The Time's They Are A-Changin'
    Another Side Of Bob Dylan
    Bringing It All Back Home
    Highway 61 Revisited
    Blonde On Blonde
    John Wesley Harding
    Nashville Skyline
    Planet Waves
Blood On The Tracks (NY Sessions if you can find them somewhere. They are worth getting)
    Desire
    Infidels
Empire Burlesque (I'm sorry, but I really like this album too)
    Oh Mercy
    Time Out Of Mind
    Love And Theft
    The Basement Tapes
The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert"
The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Rolling Thunder Revue
The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1965, The Halloween Concert

New Morning is really good to but I wouldn't recommend that be one of your first Dylan purchases
    "I'm a thief, and I dig it"
  • Yeah Blood on the Tracks is easily in my top 3 Dylan records, but the versions of the songs that didnt get used are so much better than what is on the record. And I fucking love that record as it is.

You really can't go wrong picking up the live stuff from the "Bootleg series" these days I honestly play the 1966 and 1975 recordings as much as any Dylan studio records.

My suggestion as far as Dylan buying is concerned, is to get the real essential 60's stuff first, pretty much Freewheelin through Blonde on Blonde, then the 70's stuff like Desire and Blood on the Tracks, then the country period, John Wesley Harding, New Morning and Nashville Skyline, and then if you still don't have enough you can start filling in the gaps with the more recent stuff. Be wary of some of the 80's stuff, especially the gospel period, those are really for completists only. But that is just how I look at it, Dylan has far too much music to really pigeon hole what is essential or not essential once you get past the real landmark records.
The Man has a branch office in each of our brains, his corporate emblem is a white albatross, each local rep has a cover known as the Ego, and their mission in this world is Bad Shit.

A mix of stuff from the past but not his most recent stuff wich is also excellent.

    Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gath'rin'.
And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him
As they rode him in custody down to the station
And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder.
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain't the time for your tears.

William Zanzinger, who at twenty-four years
Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres
With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him
And high office relations in the politics of Maryland,
Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders
And swear words and sneering, and his tongue it was snarling,
In a matter of minutes on bail was out walking.
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain't the time for your tears.

Hattie Carroll was a maid of the kitchen.
She was fifty-one years old and gave birth to ten children
Who carried the dishes and took out the garbage
And never sat once at the head of the table
And didn't even talk to the people at the table
Who just cleaned up all the food from the table
And emptied the ashtrays on a whole other level,
Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane
That sailed through the air and came down through the room,
Doomed and determined to destroy all the gentle.
And she never done nothing to William Zanzinger.
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain't the time for your tears.

In the courtroom of honor, the judge pounded his gavel
To show that all's equal and that the courts are on the level
And that the strings in the books ain't pulled and persuaded
And that even the nobles get properly handled
Once that the cops have chased after and caught 'em
And that the ladder of law has no top and no bottom,
Stared at the person who killed for no reason
Who just happened to be feelin' that way without warnin'.
And he spoke through his cloak, most deep and distinguished,
And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance,
William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence.
Oh, but you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Bury the rag deep in your face
For now's the time for your tears.

  • Time out of mind is superb. For some reason i can always picture Dennis Hoppper ( in a movie) going mental in a desert in Arizona and beating the shit outta someone with Time outta mind playing in the background of the movie!!
Weird i know - but not impossible

  • One of the only artists that i can say has constantly released amazing material.

Even people like McCartney, Plant, the Rolling Stones, etc,.. just can't touch Bob Dylan.

I'd definetly start with his older stuff though.

Get the concert he played on Halloween in 1964 at the NYC Philharmonic.

    brilliant. :):):):):):)
Come on pilgrim you know he loves you..

bob dylan is a magnificent poet.

and he writes a good song now and then.. :)
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
